Cancelled Relay For Life of Central St. Charles Event Raises Nearly $56,000, Will Host Relay Celebration Event Aug. 10
What was supposed to be “Cancer’s Unlucky Day” turned out to be an unlucky day for the participants of the Relay For Life of Central St. Charles. The Relay event that was scheduled for July 13 at Lutheran High School in St. Peters was cancelled during opening ceremonies due to inclement weather.
Even though the event was cancelled, in just a few hours, more than 40 teams were able to raise more than $10,000, bringing the total raised to nearly $56,000 toward the American Cancer Society.
More than 500 participants had originally signed up for the event. “We found ourselves in an unfortunate situation, and it was a difficult decision to make,” said Ben Prinster, event co-chair. “Ultimately, I believe we made the right call with everyone’s safety in mind, but we plan to finish what we started.”
A “Relay Celebration to Remember” has been planned from 7-11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Lutheran High School in St. Peters, in order to give everyone a chance to experience Relay, even if it will be on a much smaller scale. The celebration event is free to attend and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:
- 7 p.m. Small opening ceremony, team recognition
- 7-9 p.m. On-site team fundraisers, basket raffle, silent auction
- 8 p.m. Queen of Relay competition
- 9 p.m. Luminaria ceremony
- 10:30 p.m. Closing ceremony
“We welcome all of our Relay teams as well as local businesses to pack the track and fundraise toward a good cause – the fight against cancer,” said Prinster. “With everyone’s help, we hope to surpass our original goal of $63,000.”
Relay For Life of Central St. Charles is still accepting donations for the raffle baskets and silent auction. Businesses are also welcome to set up a booth and sell items to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Registration for new teams and individuals are still being accepted at relayforlife.org/centralstcharlesmo.
