Filling for 2013 Municipal Election Opens Tuesday
Ward 3 Alderwoman Terri Violet's seat is the only open seat for April's election.
Filing season for the 2012 Municipal Election kicks off Tuesday morning.
Starting at 8 a.m. applicants can file for office for the April 2, 2013, election. Unlike the past two years which saw half the board up for re-election, St. Peters has just one race that will appear on the April ballot.
One Ward 3 seat, currently belonging to Terri Violet, will be on the ballot. The seat is up for grabs only because Gus Elliott, who won the spot in 2011, resigned following a harassment investigation. Violet was appointed in September to fill the seat until April's election.
If Violet decides to run and keep her seat, it will be her third election in three years after running for the Ward 3 seat in 2011 and 2012. Violet was the lone challenger to Elliott in 2011 and was in a three-way with Burton Biermann and Tommy Roberts in 2012.
St. Peters aldermen serve four-year terms, however, the Ward 3 is open to fill out the remainder of Elliott's term. Thus, candidates will be running for a two-year term that will end at the same time as the terms of Dave Thomas (Ward 1) Judy Bateman (Ward 2) and Don Aytes (Ward 4). The Board of Aldermen approved the two-year stipulation during the Oct. 25 meeting.
The filing process begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2013. Interested candidates can file between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday except on holidays.
Qualified candidates may file their intent to run for an elected office at St. Peters City Hall. There is a $75 filing fee for the intent to run for an elected office. On the first filing day only, candidates may enter through the west entrance of City Hall starting at 8 a.m.
