McCaskill: Rape Comment 'Window Into Akin's Mind'

Claire McCaskill appeared on MSNBC Monday to discuss Todd Akin's comment on 'legitimate rape,' which she calls a 'gut-check' for Missourians.

Claire McCaskill has been quick to respond to Todd Akin's comment Sunday in an interview with Patch news partner FOX2 that aired on Sunday with Charles Jaco in which Akin suggested the female body has ways of shutting down to prevent pregnancy during a "legitimate rape."

After calling Akin's comment 'offensive' and 'outrageous' in a statement released Sunday, the Missouri Senator appeared on MSNBC Monday.

"For the state I love, I hope this is a moment where everyone who hasn't been paying close attention, um, this statement is kind of a window into Todd Akin's mind," McCaskill said on Morning Joe

McCaskill went onto note that Akin won the Republican primary by a significant margin. Akin captured 36 percent of the vote versus runner-up John Brunner who captured 30 percent

McCaskill concluded her interview on Morning Joe by saying Akin's comment should be a 'gut-check' moment for Missourians.

McCaskill isn't the only one who has slammed Akin for his remarks. In a phone interview with NationalJournal, presidential hopeful Mitt Romney said Akin's comments were "inexcusable."

Despite the backlash from the Romney, Akin plans to stay in the race for U.S. Senate. Candidates have until Tuesday afternoon to withdraw as the nominee of their party for the November election in Missouri.

Planned Parenthood plans to release a statement Monday about Akin's claims. Local hospitals interview by Patch declined to comment on Akin's comments.

A press release from the McCaskill campaign indicated plans for a Monday afternoon media event with doctors and trauma specialists to address the remarks.

In spite of Congressman Akin's comment about "legitimate rape" and not knowing what that is, I still have to agree with him that abortion is still abortion and it is still the taking of a human life. If society wants to allow the deliberate taking of a human life as it does with capital punishment, then allow it in the case of rape, but call it the taking of a human life!

Anyone who doesn't believe in abortion should never be forced to have one. Simple. Akin's comments were so far out there and stunning that it is hard to even comment on what he said. He showed absolutely no knowledge of either rape or conception - he is not who I want to represent me in this state! I can't believe he is on the House Science Committee - they must be a stellar bunch!

Deliberate taking of a human life, kinda like what the military does from time to time?

So you agree with Paul Ryan and Todd Akin that we should change the laws to state that life begins at conception??

On another note, some people (maybe Jesus) will tell you that death is not the end. Just a transition.

And if you open that window, you'll hear a whooshing sound as air fills the vacuum.

I thought it was more of a sucking sound myself.

God bless Todd Akin's brain-mouth disconnect.

If Todd Akin does not step down from the Senate race, he will bring down the entire Republican ticket here in Missouri and possibly the nation. His mistake has national implications and I hope the national republican party puts enormous pressure on him to step down before today’s deadline. He will never be able to recover from this fatal error. This was a trick question and all he had to do is say so and move on to the next question. He should have known better. If this would have come out before the primary, he would not be the candidate today.

I know. Isn't it GREAT?

It was not a trick question. He was asked if he believed in a 'no abortions ever' exception for rape victims. Akin is the one that went all 'women's bodies have the ability to disallow pregnancy' pseudo-science. He shot himself in the foot with his own beliefs on a very simple question.

And don't you just LOVE it? i know I do.

While Barack Obama turns his head, Russia is preparing for a new Naval Base in Cuba if Barack gets re-elected. This part of the "Flexibility" statement made months ago to then Russian Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev. Will Barack Obama give Guantanamo to the Russians or will they have to build a new one? We believe he will just sign Gitmo off to the Russians.
