Second-Seeded Lutheran Girls Survive District Scare
Lutheran St. Charles Cougars top Lutheran North to advance in District playoffs.
Playoff basketball is ripe for upsets.
Monday night at Whitfield High School, Lutheran North nearly pulled one off against Lutheran St. Charles. Nearly.
The Cougars of Lutheran took out the Crusaders from Lutheran North 48-40 in the opening round of the Class 3, District 7 Tournament.
Entering the game the Cougars were the heavy favorites with a 16-6 record and the second seed in the tournament. The Crusaders, on the other hand, entered Monday's game with a 3-21 record and the seventh seed in the tournament. Despite being underdogs, the Crusaders put the Cougars to the test. The two teams were tied at 21-each at the midway point before a second-half surge sank the Crusaders.
“This is district basketball,” Lutheran St. Charles head coach Pauk said to St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Are you always going to have your best game? No. Things are going to happen that are out of your control. The bottom line is that you have got to come out, make plays and win.”
The Cougars' Jamie Skerston led all scorers with 16 points in the contest.
With the win, Lutheran St. Charles advances in the tourney and will face Whitfield in the District semifinals. The game will start at 7 p.m.
