Variety Adventure Campers decided the best way to beat the summer heat was to hit the ice.

Tuesday morning campers, volunteers and members of the St. Louis Edge women's ice hockey team took the ice at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. Hockey sticks and pucks were tossed onto the ice and Edge members interacted with campers. Some skaters were content to just skate laps around the rink with their buddies while others quickly channeled their inner Wayne Gretzky.

"We have a lot of future hockey players here," Edge player Cathy Dunkin said with a smile.

Adventure Camp is a free service of Variety the Children’s Charity of St. Louis, which annually serves more than 14,500 local children with disabilities by providing them with vital medical equipment, as well as educational, therapeutic and recreational programs. Specially trained counselors and medical professionals are on-site each day of camp, as Variety places great emphasis on safety, proper equipment fit and expert instruction, all adjusted for each camper’s ability level.

The camp features kids from all over the St. Louis area. Each summer the camp has three sessions of activites for kids. Tuesday was a trip to the Rec-Plex. In addition to ice skating, kids did crafts and went for a swim.
