The St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre hosted the 13th annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony. Veterans and residents came to remember the lives of those lost in the attacks on Dec. 7, 1941. Lee Hollrah, the Chairman of the Veteran's Memorial Commission, opened the ceremony by talking about how significant the day was in United States history. He quoted Imperial Admiral Yamamoto—"We have awakened a sleeping giant"—and thanked those who gave their lives. St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano also spoke, talking …
The new version of the Spencer Road Branch of the St. Charles City-County Library District is nearly ready to open. In the mean time, the old version is nearly gone. Workers began tearing down the old building this week. The building has been gutted and walls are coming down. Crews arrived early Thursday morning ready to continue the desconstruction of the building. Library officals said the old building is expected to be completely torn down by the end of the week. The new building should be open in early 2012.
Mermaids, Supermen and ghosts wandered the halls of Fort Zumwalt high schools, filling their bags with candy on Thursday night. The Fort Zumwalt School District hosted its annual Safe Halloween event, inviting parents to bring pre-school and elementary school age children out for some family fun in their costumes. Middle and high school students in the district’s Positive Peer Influence (PPI) program teamed up with teachers to run booths and decorate the high school classrooms for the younger students. The St. Peters Justice Center is a three story maze of offices, holding cells, crime labs and more. On Sunday, tour groups were able to get an up-close look at the recently-opened building. The St. Peters Police Department hosted an open house from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tour groups met in the Municipal Court room before being given a guided tour of the building. Groups were given exclusive access to nearly every nook and cranny in the three-story building. The tours, led by St. Peters Police personnel, explored all the various parts of the building. Bauer came to the St. Peters Rec-Plex for an evening of hockey on Wednesday night. Bauer, an equipment manufacturer, continued it's Bauer Experience with a free event for hockey-playing fans in the area. The even allowed participants to try out all of the latest Bauer gear, including the new Vapor APX stick. The special event included two St. Louis Blues defensemen. Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk hit the ice to offer tips to those in attendance. Skaters were able to practice shooting accuracy, puck handling and try for the hardest shot. The River City Rascals teamed up with Ozzie Smith at Thursday's game to help out a former St. Louis Cardinal player in need. Clayton native Lonnie Maclin, who played in 12 games for the Cardinals in 1993, suffered a stroke in January. The Rascals changed their name to "The Wizards" for last night's game and asked fans to come together to help raise money for the longtime baseball coach who has no medical insurance. Ozzie Smith, a longtime friend of Maclin, gave the Rascals permission to hand out bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans on Thursday. He also threw out the first pitch of the game …
Fans of the River City Rascals didn't let the fact that it was 97 degrees at 7 p.m. in St. Charles top them from heading to the game Thursday. Most chose a spot in the shade, wrapped cool towels around their necks and some carried personal fans.
Beneath the new bridge over Spencer Road, a crowd gathered on Thursday afternoon. The crowd wasn't trying to beat the heat, although the shade of the bridge and a nice breeze did make is significantly cooler under than bridge than outside in the 90-plus degree heat, but rather celebrating the opening of the first phase of the Salt River Road Project. A little rain couldn't stop the long-awaited opening of 370 Lakeside Park. Mayor Len Pagano, the St. Peters Board of Aldermen and many others gathered at the new park for the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday afternoon. Umbrellas and hoods were popular for visitors amid the drizzle. But the rain didn't stop the city from opening the newest attraction. In fact, Mayor Pagano said he believed rain to be good luck. While the park is open, it is not yet completed. For now, visitors can rent RV pads, go fishing, use biking and hiking trails and rent watercraft. In the future, the …

High winds on Wednesday knocked down a power line in St. Peters during the afternoon rush hour. Ameren crews said a neutral ground wire was knocked loose and fell to the ground at the intersection of Mexico Road and Spencer Road. Because the wire was a ground wire, no outages were reported. It took crews—five trucks worth—about an hour to reach the scene and then around a half hour to repair the line. Traffic heading eastbound on Mexico Road and north on Spencer Road were both delayed at alternate times. By 6:30 p.m. crews were finished and the line was repaired.
There was plenty of green outside in St. Peters on Thursday, and it wasn't just for St. Patrick's Day. Monday's snow had melted and underneath was green grass. With spring offically set to start next week, St. Peters got a head start. Temperatures soared into the 70s.
The Francis Howell Central Spartans hockey team made history Tuesday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. In the the Mid-States Club Hockey Association’s Challenge Cup championship game, the Spartans defeated top-seeded CBC 7-3. The win was the first by a team from St. Charles County. Stephen Glover was on the scene and provided these photos.
The new Spencer Road Branch of the St. Charles County Library is beginning to take shape. Thursday afternoon workers were out helping put the new library together. Located next door to the current library, the building has begun to look like a real building lately with workers getting out in the nicer weather. Construction of the project is supposed to be completed by late 2011.
Back in January the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre moved into City Hall. Empty walls and display cases greeted the workers at the Centre back in January. Now it's a different story. Walls throughout the building are covered in art. Paintings and portraits from an early January show still remain. Displays cases are full and the renovated theatre, which is showing "You Can't Take It With You" this weekend, is ready to go. Nearly two months later, the Arts Centre has been transformed. Temperatures in St. Peters have been unseasonably warm all week long. On Wednesday, temperatures jumped into the 60s and are expected to stay above average for through the weekend.
The GAC Girls Swimming and Diving Championships have been going on all week at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. At 3:30 p.m. today, Feb. 10, the final heats that will decide the conference title will begin. Here are some highlights from the meet so far.
