Area Cake Creator Opening New Business In St. Peters

Laulie Cakes is a new business opening in St. Peters on Jungermann Road. owner Laura Andert specializes in making specialty cakes.

St. Peters residents will soon have a new local place to get their wedding and other specialty cakes from.

Cake creator Laura Andert, owner of Laulie Cakes, has plans to open a new store in the city. The business will be Andert’s first official store, but she has been making delicious creations out of her home for the past few years. Andert expects to be fully moved into her new location and open for business by early September.

Andert has been baking professionally for three years, but said she started making cakes eight years ago. Andert said when she couldn’t find anyone that could make the kind of cake she wanted for her daughter’s first birthday, she decided to make her own.

Shortly after that, she intended to get some professional cake baking and decorating instruction to enhance her new skills. Andert attended a Wilton cake baking class at Michael’s Crafts and was surprised when the instructor told her she was too advanced for the class.

“I went to my first class and the instructor looked at my work and basically told me I should be teaching the classes, not taking them,” she said of her skills.

Andert said she took her instructors advice and did teach the cake baking classes for a while, but decided she was more suited to baking and decorating than instructing others.

Andert said she makes an assortment of goodies, from traditional to specialty to the newest cake trends, including cake pops.

“The cake pops are new and fresh, the thing about the business is that it changes so often, it’s kind of interesting to see what we’ll do next,” she said.

In addition to the cake pops, Laulie Cakes makes cupcake vases, which are cupcakes decorated like flowers, attached to sticks and arranged in a vase like a bouquet of fresh flowers. As innovative as the vases may be, the unique design happened purely by accident.

When a batch of cake pops didn’t turn out the way she wanted them to, Andert said she used some of the extra cupcakes she had on hand and made them into flowers. The cake and frosting bouquets are her specialty and it’s something that sets her apart from everyone else. Andert said she got the unusual idea for the cupcake vases when she was a vendor at a bridal show at America’s Center.

“They looked so real that people bent down to smell them and come up with icing on their nose,” she said of her distinctive creation.

In addition to her cupcake vases, Andert said she can make any type of wedding or decorative cake for birthdays, graduations and other special celebrations.

“We create anything, there isn’t anything we don’t do, if someone wants a chocolate cake covered in ganache with sculpted gnomes we can make that,” she said with a laugh.
