Local Eatery Serves Up More Than Cakes and Pies

Mary's Morsels and More carries a variety of baked goods and also serves breakfast and lunch items.

Mary Reynolds, owner of Mary’s Morsels and More, makes items traditionally found in a bakery, while also offering a variety of food.

The eatery carries coffee cakes, gooey butter cake, pies and large cinnamon rolls, with all the items baked fresh daily. Breakfast and lunch are also served six days a week.

The baker has been making goodies professionally for 13 years, but said she began baking in childhood.

“I’ve been baking for friends and family for years,” Reynolds said.

Over the years, she has perfected her recipes to include a lot more than cakes and pies. Reynolds said Mary’s Morsels and More carries several signature items, including old fashioned cheesecake and apple dumplings. The eatery also offers breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, soups, salads and plenty to choose from for those without a sweet tooth, or who simply hunger for a meal.

“One of our most popular items is our homemade chicken and dumplings that we serve on Thursdays,” she said.

In fact, Reynolds said the item is so popular she didn’t stop making it through the summer and often sells out before the day is over.

The restaurant is also a banquet center and the facility can host social functions such as birthday parties or bridal showers, and patrons can even get a packaged deal of a catered meal complete with a cake.

Reynolds said she has no formal culinary training, but when she was a little girl she spent a lot of time baking with both of her grandmothers. The baker said she spent ten years in the kitchen with her grandmothers and baked with them from 8 years old until she was 18.

“Looking back, I just cherish the time I spent with my grandmothers, and I really enjoyed baking with them,” she said of the experience.

Even though baking was something she enjoyed throughout childhood and something she did as an adult, Reynolds said she didn’t think of turning it into a career until someone she worked with made the suggestion. The baker said about 15 years ago a friend at work told her she should sell her homemade cookies.

“My dad’s mother made the best cut-out sugar cookies and gave them out every year at Christmas,” she said.

Reynolds said at the time of her friend’s suggestion, she was making and selling around 600 dozen cookies to friends and family each Christmas season. From there, she branched out to her own business and now makes and sells cookies, pies, cakes and much more.

“I feel really fortunate to have followed in grandma’s footsteps,” she said of her baking skills.
