Zonta Club Aims To Advance Women, Provide Support For Community

Zonta Club, an international service organization with a division in St. Charles County, seeks to advance and promote the status of women world wide.

According to its website, Zonta Club of St. Charles, chartered in 1962, is one of 1,255 clubs of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women.

Zonta Club is an organization that was founded in part by Amelia Earhart in 1919—one year before women in the U.S. had the right to vote.

“The mission of the club is to support and promote women, no matter their ethnic or economic background, the organization strives to support women of all backgrounds,” said Gladys Schubach, president of Zonta Club St. Charles.

Schubach said the group is always looking for community projects that will create an impact and help others. One of their recent community projects was organized for a food pantry. The food drive was held at various Dierbergs locations in St. Charles County and the group gave out coupons and asked the grocery store patrons to purchase non-perishables to donate to local food pantries.

The food-drive was one of many fundraising events the group has been a part of. With the tenets of the organization firmly rooted in community service, Zontians work together to help others in need.

"The organization tries to perform as a group when fundraising, or performing community assistance,” Schubach said.

When asked what it takes to be a member, Schubach replied the two most important qualities are that an individual has the heart to help others and the ability to be a role model in the community.

Schubach has been a member for six years. She said she relocated to the St. Louis area in 2002 and was introduced to Zonta a couple of years after moving to the area.

“What impressed me the most was the very professional, very educated women, and I really appreciated what they did for others and the involvement in the community,” said Schubach.

Schubach also added, “Through my involvement in Zonta Club, I’ve learned that as many people as you help, will come back to you in many folds.”

“They’re always there to help put out a lending hand, that for me was welcoming coming into a new community,” she continued.

Schubach said the group welcomes the public to come to their monthly meetings and said the meetings are a great way to engage and interact.

“It’s a phenomenal way to network and connect with others,” she said of the meetings.

"Zonta is very different from any other club, it is not something you join for 'what’s in it for me,' it’s very unconditional support that looks to continuously achieve personal growth, you’ll never stand alone as a Zontian, you will always have many behind you and that’s world wide.”
