Hogsback is Back for Mountain Bikers, Hikers

St. Charles County's Klondike Park's hiking and biking trail reopens in time for Mountain Biking Festival this weekend.

Hogsback Trail, a favorite of hikers and mountain bikers in St. Charles County’s Klondike Park, has re-opened just in time for the Mountain Bike Festival Saturday and Sunday.

Severe storms in April blocked the trail with rocks, fallen trees, debris and erosion. But volunteers—including those from St. Louis Adventure Group and Gateway Off-Road Cyclists—and county parks employees helped clear the trail.

The two groups also are hosting the Mountain Biking Festival Saturday and Sunday. Members of the two groups expect the event to attract hundreds of mountain bike enthusiasts.

Riders of all experience levels are welcome to join the festival. The event is a non-competitive, outdoor festival intended to allow cyclists to spend some time riding with other mountain biking activities.

The 2-mile Hogsback Trail winds through hills in St. Charles County’s Klondike Park. The trail connects to the Lewis and Clark Trail, which connects to the Katy Trail in southwest St. Charles County’s wine country.

Klondike Park is at 4600 Highway 94 South near Augusta.

“It took St. Charles County Parks Department staff and the volunteers nearly 400 hours of labor and sweat to move debris, dirt and rocks in order to get this popular trail reopened for the public,” said Parks Director Bettie Yahn-Kramer, according to a news release.

“Klondike Park is really an amazing park with rolling hills and scenic views,” said Nancy Lee Gomer, marketing director for St. Charles County Parks. “It runs along the Missouri River--there are some great views of the river.”

“This trail resurrection was very physically demanding in challenging terrain,” said Parks Program Coordinator, Bekin Youngblood. “Two new trails and a natural stone retention wall had to be constructed in order for the trail to re-open.”

Those interested in attending the Mountain Bike Festival can spend the night in Klondike Park by reserving a cabin or campsite. There are six- and eight-person cabins and 41 campsites available. To reserve a campsite or cabin, contact the St. Charles County Parks Department at 636-949-7535.
