Gold Stop Owner Summoned for Violating Ordinance

St. Peters Police said the local business sold gold before a 15-day window was closed.

The issued a summons on Friday, in lieu of arrest, to the owner Gold Stop, located at 1600 Mid Rivers Mall, for violating a St. Peters City Ordinance.

The precious medal ordinance states businesses buying precious metals are required to maintain the metals for 15 days. The purpose of the ordinance is to allow victims the time to discover and report the missing/stolen items to their local police department. It also allows the time for investigators to find stolen items before they are irretrievable.

The case came to the attention of police in late May. Officers took a report from a person who was the victim of a robbery. Multiples pieces of jewelry, valued at approximately $1,500, were taken from her residence.

Police reached the owner on June 13 and was asked about the stolen jewelry. According to police, the owner said he had already sent the jewelry off to be melted.  The owner acknowledged that he violated the city ordinance by not maintaining the jewelry for the required 15 days.
