Man Points Gun at Girlfriend's Husband on I-70, Police Say

A Wentzville man is accused of pointing a handgun at his girlfriend’s husband while driving on Interstate 70 in St. Peters.

Nathaniel A. Gathing, 35, of the 500 block of Great Oaks Meadow in Wentzville, was charged by St. Charles County prosecutors May 2 with unlawful use of a weapon.

St. Peters Police said a driver was westbound on I-70 at the Cave Springs exit when a teal Camaro, driven by Gathing, pulled up next to him. He said Gathing began yelling at him, and the man rolled down his window to hear what the Gathing was saying.

The man told police he saw Gathing reach near an armrest and pull out a black, semi-automatic handgun. The man told police Gathing pointed the firearm at him. Gathing then accelerated and pulled ahead.

The man then spotted a St. Peters Police squad car one car ahead of him and sped up to contact the officer.

While driving down the interstate, the man told the officer the man driving the teal Camaro had pointed a handgun at him, and he believed the man was his wife’s new boyfriend.

As they approached Executive Centre Parkway, the officer sped up to catch up to Gathing's car.

The officer said Gathing then accelerated and exited quickly and carelessly onto the Interstate 370 ramp. The officer activated his emergency lights and Gathing accelerated from the ramp across all lanes of traffic on I-370, maneuvering around traffic.

A St. Peters traffic officer on a motorcycle maneuvered in front of the car and slowed down to 60 mph, allowing the patrol car to catch up, police said. At one point, Gathing threw a firearm out of the car window along I-370. The .40 cal handgun later was recovered along the shoulder.

Gathing posted a $25,000 bond and was released from jail May 2.
