Aldermen Meeting Set for Thursday Night

St. Peters Board of Aldermen will met at 5 p.m. for work session and at 7 p.m. for a meeting.

The St. Peters Board of Aldermen will decide tonight, Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, just how long a trailer can remain in a resident's driveway.

After discussion by the and , a new ordinance is on the agenda for the first meeting of August. The issue at hand is if trailers being used for home improvement projects can remain parked in driveways for 10 or 45 days.

Trailer use has been allowed in the city, as long as the trailer is stored on concrete behind the housing line. A recent change to city code allowed trailers to sit in driveways for 45 days, as long as the trailer was being used in part of an active project.

Police in St. Peters found the change difficult to enforce. The police wanted to lower the 45-day limit to just 10 days a year. Ten days was seen by many, including the Planning and Zoning Commission, as too short to complete a project.

The Board of Aldermen came up with a compromise at the July 28 meeting. Since most significant projects—deck replacements, home additions, etc.—require a permit, the code could change to reflect that. With a permit, residents could keep a trailer in the front of the property for 45 days. Without a permit, the 10-day rule would be enacted.
