Board of Aldermen Vote Through Ordinances With No Objections

Nine items on the agenda all passed by 8-0 vote.

The dais at the may have a new look at the next Board of Aldermen meeting with the upcoming election, but Thursday's meeting still had the familiar faces—and familiar results.

For potentially the last time with four aldermanic spots up for grabs at the April 5 General Election, the current members of the St. Peters governing body met at the Justice Center. The members made the meeting count, passing nine new ordinances on the night, upping the total to 50 for the year. As Mayor Len Pagano joked at the end of the meeting, the City of St. Peters has passed more new business in three months than that state of Missouri will probably do all year long.

The board actually had 10 items up for vote at the meeting, but one item was pushed back until April. The other nine items went up for votes and all passed with a resounding 8-0 vote.

Among the highlights of the voting process, the board agreed to end a lease agreement with Central County Fire and Rescue for a building in Old Town St. Peters. The plan now is to tear down the storage facility and use the space for more parking.

The board also approved an agreement with Ameren Missouri to remove a pole as part of the Mexico Road Widening Project. In order to widen Mexico Road from McGavoc to Cross Trail Lane and complete the connection of Dubrey Drive to Mexico Road, a power line must be relocated. Ameren will split the cost with the city as long as the utilities are placed underground, which the board agreed to do.

CHICKEN DISCUSSION SET FOR PLANNING AND ZONING MEETING

One item not on the agenda for Thursday’s meeting was the discussion of “urban” chickens. the board debated the merits of allowing controlled ownership of chickens within city limit. The board considered voting on the ordinance Thursday, but couldn’t because the discussion needs to go in front of the Planning and Zoning Commission first.

For now, the chicken discussion will take place at the April 6 Planning and Zoning meeting and the Board will vote on the issue at the April 28 meeting.

In the work session, Alderman Gus Elliott, Ward 3 said he had done some polling that showed a majority of his residents supported the chickens. Other Aldermen weren’t convinced by Elliott’s poll since it wasn’t limited to St. Peters residents and it left out a variety of provisions—like cost of permits—that board had debated.
