Old St. Peters City Hall May Be Demolished or Sold

The St. Peters Board of Aldermen will discuss the future of the old building during Thursday's work session.

The Old City Hall in Old Town St. Peters could soon become a new parking lot.

The building at 107 Main Street hasn't been used as city hall by the city since the 60s. The city had been letting the St. Peters Jaycees lease the building, but that group has since disbanded because of declining membership. Finding another group to lease the building isn't in the cards because the poor condition of the building.

At this point, with the Jaycee's lease expiring on March 1, Old City Hall will be vacant and Mayor Len Pagano wants to do something with the building. During Thursday's work session the Board of Aldermen will begin discussions on the fate of the building and right now there are three options, one of which has likely already been ruled out.

The first option the board will discuss is to simply sell the building. According to the agenda, the building has been appraised at $55,000. The city could re-appraise the building and offer it up to the public for sale.

The second option is to simply destroy the building to create more public parking in Old Town—something Pagano said during the city's annual CIP meeting that is always mentioned as a problem.

One option not on the agenda for Thursday's meeting is one discussed during the CIP meeting. Pagano said during that meeting it would cost the $150,000 to repair and restore the building. That idea appeared to die at the CIP meeting because no one could come up with what to do with the building after a costly renovation.

With the building about to be vacant in March, Pagano is requesting the board reach a consenous on Thursday about the future of the meeting.

Also on the work session agenda:

  • The board will hear construction bids for several projects
  • Proposed rates for the St. Peters golf course will be presented
  • Discussion will take place about construction on Willott Road Bridge

Following the 5 p.m. work session, the regular meeting will start at 7 p.m. The bulk of the voting agenda relates to storm water projects that will be worked on because of Prop P.
