Bulldogs' Potent Offense Too Much For Lions

Fort Zumwalt South knocks off rival Fort Zumwalt East on the soccer pitch Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs red-hot offense overpowered the Lions on Tuesday in a Gateway Athletic Conference North contest at Zumwalt South.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in the league with the 3-0 win while the Lions drop to 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Junior midfielder/forward Tyler Womack certainly came through for the Bullogs. He scored two of the three goals in the win. The junior scored his first goal of the season Sept. 23, in a 3-0 win over Zumwalt North.

“He’s (Womack) the type of player who can get the job done,” Bulldog coach Jim Layne said. “He’s the type of player who can get things done when he feels like it’s time for him to play and I think tonight was that type of game for him.”

Nathan Laramie scored South’s first goal with 17:21 left to play in the first half. Laramie was right in front of the goal when he took control of the ball and put it in the back of the net.

Womack scored the second goal with 8:37 left to play in the opening half. He got the ball in front of the goal when he fired off a shot.

Womack scored the last time five minutes into the second half. Laramie passed the ball to Womack who knocked it in on a header.

Although they trailed 3-0 late in the second half the Lions challenged South for a short period of time, as they had two shots on goal between the 18:00 mark and 11:00 minute mark, but goalie Drew Orf batted the ball away both times. Orf has a 6-3 overall record. He earned his third shutout of the season against East.

“They put a little pressure on us at time,” Layne said. “Drew is a freshman. He’s come in for us. He has a ton of potential and a ton of talent.”

East coach Seth Wilber felt his team had some chances early.

“They came out really strong, but we had three really good chances in the first 10 or 15 minutes,” he said. “We didn’t convert and they get their first look at a goal and they score. It’s been an issue for us all season long. The way they scored is the way we’ve scored all season, on a pass. It took the wind out of our sails.”
