Central Spartans Hitter Keeps Things Simple

Spartans DH Andrew Maxey's approach is to make contact, a strategy that has netted him a .400 batting average.

The Central Spartans American Legion baseball team’s hitting helped propel it past St. Peters Post 313  in a contest at Clarence and Huster Field.

And designated hitter Andrew Maxey certainly provided some spark in the 6-5 win. He went 2-for-4 with singles in the third and seventh innings. Maxey made contact in every at-bat; he flied out in the first and grounded out in the fifth. The Spartans had 10 hits in the contest while Post 313 had seven.

“I just don’t like striking out, that’s the big thing with me,” Maxey said. “I just try to choke it up and poke it the other way. I did get a base hit to left (field) tonight, but that’s not really what I’m all about. I like to put the ball into right field.”

The designated hitter said that the Spartans’ offense was better against Post 313 than in previous games.

“We’ve been off an on in the past couple of games,” he said. “We’ve been beat by a large margin, but whenever we win, we win by a lot. Tonight was just a good ballgame all around.”

Maxey is hitting .400 this summer. He said the key to consistent hitting is shortening his swing and trying to put the ball in play. Maxey—a resident of St. Peters—graduated from Francis Howell Central in the spring. He played high school baseball only in his freshman and sophomore years, as he chose to concentrate on his roller and ice hockey careers in his junior and senior years. Maxey played for Howell Central’s roller and ice hockey teams. Giving up baseball didn’t seem to be an option considering the time he’s dedicated to it. Maxey started his career on the diamond when he was five-years-old.

“It’s a lot of fun to hang out with the guys, travel around, and play some ball,” he said on the legion game. “It’s a good time.”

Maxey will attend in the fall. He’s planning on trying to walk on to the roller hockey and baseball teams.
