Fort Zumwalt South Pulls Out Double-Overtime Soccer Thriller Over Lafayette

Senior Jake Reinsmith's blast with 5 minutes left in second OT, gives Bulldogs its first win of the season.

JACK BALL STADIUM – When junior Nathan Laramie is on the field, boys soccer head coach Jim Layne believes his Bulldogs have a unique weapon.

Never mind that Laramie can be a handful to try to cover for any defender, whether he has the ball or not, Layne loves the versatile forward’s dynamic ability to turn simple throw-ins into scoring chances by always making accurate tosses right into the heart of the defense.

“I tell these guys all the time to take advantage of that,” Layne said. “When you’ve got a guy that can throw it right into the center of the box every time, you should use that and try to score with that.”

And that’s exactly what the Bulldogs did with nearly five minutes left in the second overtime of Thursday’s non-conference match against Lafayette High.

Laramie made a throw-in from the left side that no Lafayette defender could get to, but Bulldog teammate Jake Reinsmith did.

And before any of the Lancers could stop him, Reinsmith burst through the Lafayette defensive end and blasted a wicked shot past goalkeeper Ryan Gettinger, for his first goal of the season and a 3-2 South win.

“All season long our boys have been coming out and they’ve been battling,” Layne said. “And Lafayette, tip of the cap to them. They’re a great team. They put a lot of pressure on us. But we stayed organized, and we were able to come through when we needed to.”

And not just in double overtime either, the Bulldogs made a number of brilliant plays throughout the game that produced several excellent scoring opportunities.

The first one that proved successful though, came midway through the first half, when sophomore Matt Galvin scored on a shot from the left flank, which deflected off a Lafayette defender, and sailed over Gettinger’s head and into the Lancer net, for a 1-0 South lead.

Lafayette’s Lucas Hake, who had both Lancer goals on Thursday, tied the game about 10 minutes later off a feed from teammate Jean-Luc Panchot.

But South went ahead again just before the half, when senior Austin Andrews, the Bulldogs leading scorer in 2010, out-leaped everyone on a corner kick from Laramie, and headed one past Gerringer to make it 2-1 South.

“The boys did a fantastic job,” Layne said. “They battled all game long.”

South seemed sure to close the game out in regulation, with no need to play overtime, until Hake pulled his own Andrews impression and outleaped two Bulldog players on a free kick from freshman teammate Austin Panchot. Hake connected for a brilliant goal that tied the score with just under five minutes left.

“You have to credit that kid for the play he made,” Layne said. “Our keeper kind of misjudged it and was out of position. And the kid saw it, and it went up and got it. It was a great play by him.”

Fortunately for the Bulldogs, and their raucous fans, Hake’s end of regulation dramatics didn’t ruin the night. It instead only set up the ultimate heroics for Laramie and Reinsmith in double-overtime.

South will get the weekend off, before returning to action on Tuesday, September 13, when the Bulldogs will host St. Charles West at Jack Ball Stadium, at 7 p.m.

Lafayette, which suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday, will play three road games next week, (at Howell Central on Monday; at Zumwalt West on Tuesday; and at McCluer North on Thursday).

The Lancers will play several more road games after that, before finally returning back home to Wildwood, for a game on their own field, against Marquette on October 13.
