Friday Night Spotlight: It's Playoff Time

Week 8 offers a full slate of playoff games around St. Peters.

The prep football season is winding down and that means one thing: District play.

Fort Zumwalt South and Fort Zumwalt East have been playing playoff games for two weeks, but now Lutheran St. Charles and Francis Howell Central get to join in the fun. Week 8 is a full slate of playoff games and really the start of the real season.

Let's take a look at the upcoming games.

 (3-4) vs. Wentzville Holt (3-4) at 7 p.m.

The Class 5, District 4 race is five teams fighting for two spots. No one is a clear favorite.

Zumwalt East and Holt will matchup on Friday and try to get to two wins in the District and jump into the driver's seat for a playoff spot.

The Lions are coming off a shootout loss to Zumwalt North. East backup quarterback Tommy Bryan scored three touchdowns and led to Lions to 42 points, but the team still lost to Zumwalt North. The Lions are 1-1 in District play so far. 

Holt has just one District game under its belt, and it was a thrilling win. The Indians won a double-overtime contest with Zumwalt South. Holt's defense held the Bulldogs to just seven regulation points in Week 7.

 (4-3) at Timberland (2-5) at 7 p.m.

Zumwalt South has played two District games and has two tough losses. The Bulldogs lost in Week 6 by one point and in Week 7 in double overtime. At 0-2, the Bulldogs are the team with the most losses in District play. A loss this week would sink the playoff hopes for South.

Timberland is just 2-5 on the season, but is 1-0 in the Class 5, District 4 play. The Wolves were the odd team out in Week 7, but pulled out a win against Zumwalt North in Week 6. The Wolves are seeking a second win against no loses in District play.

 (0-7) vs. Clopton/Elsberry (5-2) at 7 p.m. 

Lutheran is 0-7 and has been shut out three straight weeks. Things aren't good right now for the Cougars as it begins District play.

The Cougars will host the Clopton/Elsberry IndianHawks in the District opener. Clopton/Elsberry is 5-2 on the season and has scored 298 points—252 more than Lutheran.

Francis Howell Central (3-4) at Francis Howell (4-3) at 7 p.m.

Francis Howell Central kicks off District play with a matchup with Francis Howell. The District rivals will be District rivals in the Class 6, District 5 playoffs. Both teams are 3-1 in GAC South and coming off of loses. 

Howell Central struggled last season with Howell, losing 41-0.

The Vikings have a powerful offense that has scored more than 35 points a game this season.
