Friday Night Spotlight: Week 2 Football Begins With Threat of Rain

In Week 2, Howell Central faces off with Zumwalt South, Zumwalt East looks to take down Howell North and Lutheran St. Charles looks for win No. 2.

Football is one of those rare all-weather sports. Rain or shine, football players play (unless, of course, there is lightning).

For some schools with synthetic grass, the rain isn't much of a factor. Schools that still play on grass? Mud city.

Week 2 of the high school football season is set to kick off Friday night. Around the same time, remnants of Hurricane Isaac will be heading toward St. Peters  to drop some rain. Some schools are pushing back start times, but the St. Peters schools are not.

For the second week in a row the Francis Howell Central Spartans will welcome a Zumwalt school. After falling last week to Zumwalt East, the Spartans will take on Zumwalt South on Friday night.

Howell Central head coach Todd Berck said last week a poor first half . The Spartans will try to avoid that fate on Friday against South.

Zumwalt South enters the week fresh off a 21-18 road win against Troy. The Bulldogs were led by senior running back Chase Abbington's 104 yards on 20 carries and a pair of touchdowns.

 (1-0) vs. Francis Howell North (0-1) at 7 p.m.

After a big season-opening win on the road, the Zumwalt East Lions will get to head home. The Lions will face Howell North as they made their way through the Francis Howell district.

East took down Howell Central last week behind a strong defensive effort and an offense that clicked enough to put up points. The Lions will need a repeat in Week 2 against the Knights.

Howell North will be looking for win No. 1 on their short road trip. The Knights lost 39-20 to Vianney after falling behind early and being unable to catch up.

Lutheran head coach Matt Marty finally has a win as the head Cougars. After going winless last season, the Tigers opened up 2012 with a 27-21 win against Principia. The win snapped Marty's 10-game losing skid and the Cougars 18-game streak dating back to 2010.

Quarterback Brett Collins led Lutheran. He was 12-for-21 for 209 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions. As a running threat, Collins carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards and a score.

This Friday the Cougars will face DuBourg—a team coming off a 49-0 loss to Lutheran South.
