Howell Central Girls Move On With Sectional Win

Zumwalt South boys season ends with loss to McCluer North.

The Francis Howell Central girls are on a roll.

Wednesday night the Spartans hit the court for a sectional contest against Hazelwood Central—a familiar foe. The two squads had met twice already this season with each team gaining a victory. On Wednesday Howell Central won the tiebreaker and ended the Hawks' season.

Paced by a hot start, the Spartans never trailed en route to a 46-34 win.

While the news was good for the Howell Central girls, the boys saw their season end.

The South boys were no match for McCluer North. The defending State Champion Stars pounded the Bulldogs 62-28 to pick up the Sectional win.

"Obviously they're very good with a lot of talent,” Zumwalt South coach Bill Friedel said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “But we picked the worst time to play our worst game of the year. We could not function on either end. I was really, really disappointed defensively. We just stood around and watched them play. We did not dictate anything.”

South's George Cater scored 11 points in the game.

The Bulldogs finish the season with a 16-12 record, impressive considering the team started the year 2-7.
