Sports Report: Conference Play Heats Up in 2012

Week 7 of the winter season means an increase of games—and important ones at that—around St. Charles County.

The holiday season is over and that means it's time for the winter season to pick up.

The first week of 2012 is jam packed with games and, more importantly, conference games. The season of tournaments is nearly over, now it's time to determine conference crowns. 

Here are some games to watch this week around St. Charles County.

  • Who: (Wrestling) Zumwalt South at GAC North Championships
  • When/Where: 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, at Fort Zumwalt North
  • Why the big deal?: The Zumwalt South wrestling team will have a big test early in 2012. The Bulldogs will head to Zumwalt North for a tournament against all of the GAC North—a good test to see where the wrestlers stand as the second half of the year begins.

  • Who: (Girls swimming) Zumwalt East at Zumwalt North Invitational 
  • When/Where: 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the . 
  • Why the big deal?: The Fort Zumwalt East girls swim team has been out of the pool since before the winter break but is back with two meets in two days—the biggest coming Saturday. The Lady Lions will head to the Rec-Plex for a multi-team event hosted by Zumwalt North 

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Lutheran vs. John F. Kennedy High School 
  • When/Where: 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at home. 
  • Why the big deal?: The Lutheran Cougars get a rare treat this Friday night: a real home game. Taking out the early-season Cougar Invitational tournament, Friday's matchup with JFK will be Lutheran's first home game of not only 2012, but of the entire season. 

Francis Howell Central

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Howell Central vs. Troy Buchanan
  • When/Where: 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at home
  • Why the big deal?: Howell Central's boys basketball team will come out of the winter break with a big conference game. The 2-7 Spartans will face the 8-5 Troy Trojans in the GAC South opener for both squads.

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Howell North vs. St. Charles
  • When/Where: 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at St. Charles
  • Why the big deal?: Howell North students will be off from school Tuesday, but the Howell North boys basketball team won't be. The Knights will head to St. Charles for a non-conference game against its St. Charles rivals.

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Duchesne vs. Fort Zumwalt North
  • When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at Zumwalt North
  • Why the big deal?: Duchesne gets a big GAC North matchup this Friday when it heads to Zumwalt North. The Pioneers (6-4) and the Panthers (5-4) will meet for the first time this season.

Orchard Farm

  • Who: (Girls basketball) Orchard Farm vs. Montgomery County
  • When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Montgomery County
  • Why the big deal?: The 5-2 Orchard Farm girls will open 2012 with a road trip. The Lady Eagles will head to Montgomery County for an EMO Conference game on Tuesday. 

  • Who: (Boys basketball) St. Charles vs. Washington
  • When/Where: 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at home
  • Why the big deal?: St. Charles will have a busy schedule coming out of the winter break with three games in four days. The second of those three is a GAC North contest against Washington at home. 

  • Who: (Girls basketball) St. Charles West vs. Francis Howell Central 
  • When/Where: 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at home
  • Why the big deal?: St. Charles West will play two games heading out of the winter break. The Lady Warriors will host Francis Howell Central in the second game back from the time off. 

  • Who: (Wrestling) Fort Zumwalt North vs. Chaminade vs. Westminster
  • When/Where: 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Westminster
  • Why the big deal?: Gearing up from the weekend's big GAC North Wrestling Tournament, the Panthers will have a tune up tri-meet. North will face against Chaminade and Westminster to prep for the conference tourney. 

  • Who: (Girls swimming) Zumwalt West vs. Zumwalt East
  • When/Where: 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at the Rec-Plex
  • Why the big deal?: Zumwalt East and Zumwalt West will hit the pool on Friday for a Zumwalt rivalry matchup. West won't have any rest after the break, swimming three times in five days. 

  • Who: (Boys basketball) St. Dominic vs. Helias
  • When/Where: 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at the Rec-Plex
  • Why the big deal?: St. Dominic and Helias will square off in the Crusaders first game of 2012. St. Dominic is 4-6 on the season.

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Christian vs. Whitfield
  • When/Where: 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Whitfield
  • Why the big deal?: Christian returns to the court in 2012 with a game against Whitfield.

  • Who: (Girls basketball) Timberland vs. Farmington
  • When/Where: 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, at home
  • Why the big deal?: Timberland will play three games this week and Thursday's game with Farmington is the first of two at home. The Wolves will also play on Tuesday and Friday. 

  • Who: (Boys basketball) Holt vs. Florissant
  • When/Where: 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Florissant
  • Why the big deal?: The Holt boys basketball team opens up 2012 with a road game. The Indians will travel to Florissant for a non-conference game.
