Sports Report: Cross Country Joins Football in District Action

The week of Oct. 17 is filled with must-see games all around St. Charles County.

As the weather gets colder, the games get bigger.

Football playoffs are now in full swing and plenty of huge games are going to take place this Friday night. Other sports are also gearing up for big late-season action.

Football

Week 8 is in the books and that means everyone has played at least one District game. Week 9 is a chance for teams to either stay alive in District play, pull ahead or see hopes dashed. It is arguably the biggest week of the football regular season.

  • 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21 at St. Charles West
  • For the first time this season, St. Charles West is coming off a loss. The Warriors were downed by St. Francis Borgia 28-21 in Week 8. The loss dropped the Warriors to 0-1 in the Class 4, District 8 playoffs. To advance to the State tourney, St. Charles West needs a win this week against the 8-0 St. Dominic Crusaders. St. Dominic beat Warrenton 14-0 last week. A win for the Crusaders would almost guarantee a playoff spot in the tough District.

  • 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21 at Timberland
  • Oh what crazy times have been had in the Class 5, District 4 playoffs. The five-team District is tight with all teams having at least one loss. Only one team, Fort Zumwalt East, has multiple wins. The Lions will play Timberland on Friday for a chance to go 3-1 in the District, all but guaranteeing a playoff spot. The Wolves are 1-1 after losing to Zumwalt South last week. A win would keep Timberland in the playoff hunt, a loss would do severe damage to those playoff chances.

  • 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21 at Zumwalt North
  • In other Class 5, District 4 action, the Holt Indians and Fort Zumwalt North Jaguars are trying to get win No. 2 this Friday. North is 1-1 and coming off a bye week. Prior to the bye, the Jags torched Zumwalt East 59-42. Holt, also 1-1, is coming off a one-point loss to Zumwalt East. The winner of this tilt will be 2-1 and in prime position for a playoff spot.

 vs. Jefferson City

  • 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 21 at Jefferson City
  • In Class 6, District 6 play, the Zumwalt West Panthers take on Jefferson City. Both teams are 1-0 in District play and likely playing for the District title. West beat up on Hickman last week with a 42-14 win.
