Springs Sports Winding Down for St. Peters High School Students

Baseball and softball Districts thin field as season winds down. Lutheran baseball and Francis Howell North girls soccer win District titles to remain alive.

Baseball Districts

Last week District baseball champions were crowned after a weeklong tournament. Here's how the St. Peters schools fared. 

Lutheran High School: Class 3, District 6

  • The Lutheran Cougars baseball team claimed the Class 3, District 6 title with a series of blowout wins. The Cougars jumped on McCluer South 11-1 in the opening round. After that, Lutheran took out Trinity 13-3. Finally, in the District finals, Lutheran blasted Christian 12-0 to claim the title. The Cougars (21-6) will take on Westminster (23-4-1) at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 in the first round of sectional play. 

Fort Zumwalt East: Class 4, District 8

  • The Lions placed second in the District Tournament. In the opening game, Fort Zumwalt East topped Fort Zumwalt West 5-4. In the semifinals, the Lions roared past Francis Howell 10-4 to advance to the District finals. Squaring off against Francis Howell, Zumwalt East lost 5-4.

Fort Zumwalt South: Class 4, District 8

  • The Bulldogs lost 2-1 in the opening round of Districts. Fort Zumwalt North was the winner in extra innings.

Francis Howell Central: Class 4, District 8

  • The Spartans powered past St. Charles West 11-1 in the District opener before falling to Zumwalt East 10-4 in the District semifinals.

Francis Howell North: Class 4, District 7

  • The Knights of Francis Howell North weren’t able to top CBC in the finals of their District tourney. In the opener, the Knights were able to take down St. Charles 7-3. In round two, Howell North knocked off Pattonville 4-3 to advance to the Finals. There, the Knights lost 6-1 to Christian Brothers College.
Girls Soccer Districts

Last week District girls champions were crowned as well. Here's how the St. Peters schools fared. 

Francis Howell North: Class 3, District 7

  • The Francis Howell North Lady Knights are Class 3, District 7 Champions. Howell North had a first-round bye before squaring off with Francis Howell Central in Round 2. With a 3-0 score, the Lady Nights beat the Lady Spartans to advance to the finals. Francis Howell was waiting for the Lady Knights in the finals and the two teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation and a first overtime period. In the second overtime Howell North would bury a goal and come away with a 2-1 win and a District title.

    The Lady Knights will take on Fort Zumwalt West at 7 p.m. on May 24 in St. Charles in the opening round of Sectionals.

Fort Zumwalt East: Class 3, District 7

  • The Fort Zumwalt East Lady Lions fell in the District opener to Francis Howell Central. The Lady Spartans and Lady Lions needed two overtimes to decide a winner. Howell Central was able to finally net a goal and come out with a 1-0 win.

Fort Zumwalt South: Class 3, District 8

  • Fort Zumwalt South beat Timberland 2-0 to open the Class 3, District 8 Tournament. In Round 2, the Lady Bulldogs took on Troy Buchanan. Zumwalt South lost 2-1.

Francis Howell Central: Class 3, District 7

  • Howell Central was 1-1 in the District tournament. The Lady Spartans defeated Zumwalt East 1-0 in double overtime to win in Round 1. Round 2 was a different story. Howell Central lost to Howell North 3-0.

Lutheran High School: Class 1, District 7

  • The Lutheran girls in the Class 1, District 7 finals.
State Golf

Francis Howell North golfer Clint Toedtman placed 72nd at the Class 4 State Golf tournament. Toedtman carded an opening-round 88 and followed that up with an 81 for a two-day total of 169.

In the Class 2 tournament, Matthew Niewald and Justin Wrozier of Lutheran High School tied for 17th. Niewald shot an 80-83-163 while Wrozier went 82-82-163. Teammate Alexander McKay went 85-85-170 for a 33rd place finish. 

State Tennis

Francis Howell North beat Francis Howell 5-2 in the opening round of the boys tennis State team tournament. In Round 2, however, the Knights lost to Parkway Central 5-0.
