St. Charles West beats Zumwalt East in "Pink Out" Game

The Warriors defeated the Lions 61–39.

The (3–20) collapsed at the feet of the St. Charles West Warriors (12–11) Wednesday night. The Warriors defeated the Lions 61–39 in their Pink Out make-up game. The annual Pink Out game raises money and awareness for breast cancer.

“This is always a fun night. It’s just as much about Pink Out as it is winning or losing,” said Warrior head coach Ellen Parker. “The girls are always pumped about this game and enjoy decorating the gym for the occasion.”

The Warriors started the game with intensity and kept that intensity throughout the remainder of the game. The Lions were able to keep up early in the first quarter but after they had scored five points the Warriors went on a 10–0 run with 5-foot-11 senior forward Aisha Buxcel and senior guard Blake French each contributing five points bringing the quarter to a 16–8 close.

The Lions tried to come back in the second quarter but were outscored by three points. The Warriors entered their locker room at half time with a comfortable cushion of 27–16. French tallied 14 points and three steals. Buxcel and French tied in total rebounds obtaining seven each.

Both teams put forth extraordinary effort however the Lions couldn’t retreat against the Warriors’ aggressiveness.“They have mental lapses but I can’t ever fault their effort,” Parker said. Buxcel worked hard on the inside protecting the Warriors basket finishing the game with five blocks and was the lead scorer with 17 points.

Throughout the game the Warriors salvaged a total of 10 blocks and 12 steals making it more difficult for the Lions to catch back up. Despite the Lions’ efforts to close the gap, the Warriors continued to build their lead. By the end of the third quarter the Warriors had increased their lead by 22 points making it a 46 – 24 game

 “For the most part we played well,” said Parker. “We were cold shooting wise in the first half but came out strong in the second half.”
