St. Peters Post 313 Drops Legion Game to Washington

Hot-hitting Washington thumps Post 313 21-9 on Tuesday night.

The Washington Post 218 American Legion baseball team earned its 29th victory of the season last night against St. Peters Post 313 in a contest at in St. Peters.

The hot-hitting Washington squad (29-2) defeated St. Peters in a 21-9 rout. Washington banged out 18 hits in the contest.

“Both teams were in a tournament over the weekend so the pitching depth wasn’t there,” Washington coach Mike Gardner said. “But we managed to score a lot of runs and get the win.”

Post 218 threw three pitchers in the contest. Brendan Feldmann started on the mound and was relieved by Tyler Thompson in the fourth.

Washington wasted little time scoring runs. Post 218 scored two runs in the first and three in the second. The offensive explosion continued throughout the game with a brief pause in the sixth. Washington scored another run in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth and seven in the seventh.

“They’re a very good team with a great record,” St. Peters coach Marty Clements said. “They did what they were supposed to do. They hit the ball well and made defensive plays.”  

St. Peters pulled close in the third, as Tyler Rutledge’s two-run single cut Washington’s lead to 6-4. Post 313 also showed some life in the fourth, as designated hitter Blake Hetelle’s two–run single made the score 9-6.

Post 313 drops to 12-12 with the loss.

“Lately we’ve been struggling, we’ve had pitching problems with three of our best pitchers being hurt,” Clements said. “But we still need to respond and get ready for districts.”

St. Peters threw four pitchers against Post 218: Taylor Aldridge, Tyler Price, David Weinhold, and Tim Miller. Pitchers Eric Keling , Hetelle, and Tim Miller have all suffered injures this season that have limited their time in the position, but they’ve earned time in other positions. Keling played at shortstop and Hettelle was a designated hitter in the contest against Washington.
