Summer Camps Give Kids Change to Remain Active

St. Peters Rec-Plex summer camps aim to keep youngsters entertained.

The St. Peters Summer Activity Camps at the St. Peters Rec-Plex exposes local youth to fun and fitness in a variety of settings.              “The purpose is to keep the kids busy and active every day,” Assistant Camp Director Marc Daigle said. “We try to do this mainly outside. It’s easier for kids to stay in motion and remain active outside.” The camps run five days a week —Monday through Friday—and last from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Camps are divided into an activities and sports sections—the activities section is for six to 12-year-olds and the sports section in for seven to 12-year-olds. Activities camps expose campers to a variety of games and fitness while sports camps concentrate on a particular sport. Both sections last one week and …

Moms Talk

Moms Talk: Should I Make My Kids Be Active?

Our Moms council tackles the issue active kids.

Each week in Moms Talk, our council of smart parents take your questions, give advice and share solutions. Meet the council of moms here. Our question this week comes from Holly Hunt: "I'm currently looking at some sort of activity for E. and C. to do. Neither of them really wants to do anything I suggest. I'm thinking of signing them up for something anyway—it will be good for them. But should I make them do something if they really would rather stay inside, watch TV and play video games?" Moms council member Patti Baratta weighs in with her thoughts: "Over the years I have signed my kids up for a variety of activities—soccer, basketball, softball, baseball, piano, guitar, flute, ice skating, art camp, academic camp (they are teens and …

Let Them Play

Picking an age to start kids in sports can be tricky.

In the midst of very erratic work week thanks to the consistent pummeling of snow and ice upon the metro area, I had a conversation with a co-worker. Like myself, he has small children and the topic we tossed around was sports and activities that our respective children have played or seem eager to try out. It was simple, various chatter thrown around while silently wondering if the whole city was going to be shut down for a few days due to the speculation that potentially a few feet of snow may cover the ground. Since that mid-week discussion, the question of when to start kids in sports and activities has sat in my head. Not a bad idea for an article, I've been thinking. My oldest daughter is turning 4 next week, and she is quite an …

Raising Cain: Thoughts on Motherhood

Snow Days Provide Chance to Spend More Time with Kids

Ideas for entertaining the kids when winter weather keeps them home from school.

When I was a girl, nothing made me happier than to wake up to several inches of snow on the ground. My brother and I would eat our breakfast with one eye on the television waiting for the news to include our county in the school closings. Once the magic words appeared, we abandoned our oatmeal and had our snow boots on faster than the weatherman could say, "snow day." In a world before helicopter parenting, we would dash outdoors with only a neighborhood full of children accompanying us.  No one missed their children unless they didn't turn up for a meal. We played in the snow all day and arrived home late in the evening with red cheeks and dripping noses. We would peel off layers of wet clothes and snow crusted gloves and get mugs of Mom'…

A friend in Kansas City,KS had a great idea for those snow days when it's too cold to play outside- bring the snow indoors! She places a tarp under her daughter's plastic pool in their walk-out basement. She fills it with snow and let's her son and daughter play until it melts. She can then just pour the melted snow back outside.   more ›
