Borders Files For Bankruptcy: Is It My Fault?

Borders has filed for reorganization relief under Chapter 11.

The Borders chain of bookstores has seen me through many phases of my life: grad school, heartbreak, and many a lazy afternoon. So how did I repay it? By ordering books, magazines and -- yes -- calendars online. I will even confess to leafing through books and magazines at the Borders Cafe and then leaving the store without a qualm. Now, Borders has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and will close 30 percent of its stores. After more than four years in a town that lacked a Borders (Columbia, MO) I watched and waited Wednesday, to hear if any of the branches in Metro St. Louis are on the chopping block. It would be a personal blow to lose the Borders in Brentwood, my favorite, or the one at South County Mall. That's where I hang out  and work…

St. Peters Borders Location Slated to Close

Borders Group Inc. filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday and announced it will close the St. Peters store among others.

Borders Group, owners of the Borders book and music stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Store Manager Brendan Cody heard the news Wednesday morning, learning that his Borders in the Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters will be closing.  Blaming a difficult economic climate, the bookstore announced that nearly 30 percent of its more than 600 stores nationwide as part of a restricting project. From the official Borders restructuring site: "In light of the ongoing impact of the difficult economy of the past few years, and the rapidly changing retailing environment for books and related products, it is essential that Borders restructure itself to reposition its business to be viable and successful over the long term.
