St. Peters Summer Camps Registration Begins March 12

St. Peters Summer Camps will take place at the new Cultural Arts Center in City Hall.

This summer St. Peters kids can excersie the mind and body all at one camp. St. Peters Summer Art Camps have moved to the new St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre in the west wing of City Hall. Art Campers can exercise the imagination by creating art, and—new this year—they can spend part of the time getting some exercise at the Rec-Plex next door or in the surrounding City Centre Park. Swimming, ice skating, playtime in the park and more activities will be mixed in with Art Camp. The St. Peters Rec-Plex, meanwhile, gives you the option of Activities Camps or Sports Camps—all Rec-Plex campers have swimming, ice skating, playing in the gym and park, going on field trips and other activities. The difference is that Sports Campers also train on …

Here We Go Again: Winter Storms Coming to St. Peters

Ice, snow and sleet predicted to hit city this week.

Just as the snow from the last snowstorm has nearly melted completely away, St. Peters is bracing for another round in its battle with Mother Nature. Some are calling it snowmageddon or the snowpocalypse. Others are using a different term: Historic. The first wave hit this morning in the form of freezing rain. Before noon on Monday, rain fell on St. Peters. Parked cars were covered with a glaze of ice. Monday’s storm died out, but the storm is just the beginning. The National Weather Service is calling for more freezing rain later on tonight. In the morning, snow and sleet are possible. Snow should be coming in the afternoon—and not just any snow, but heavy snow. The snow and sleet could produce 3 to 5 inches of accumulation. Snow will …

Local Group Welcomes Writers of All Genres

Saturday Writers meets the last Saturday of each month at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, and prospective members are encouraged to attend.

Established and aspiring writers in the St. Peters area looking for camaraderie with other writers as well as writing tips should look no further than Saturday Writers. Saturday Writers is one of many writers groups that meet in the St. Louis Metro area. However, one of the many distinguishing factors of Saturday Writers is they are the only large writers group that meets in St. Charles County—in St. Peters to be exact. The group currently has about 80 members and membership is open to all ages and writers of all genres, said newly elected president, Becky Povich. As the name suggests, the group, which was established in 2002, meets on Saturdays and those interested in joining Saturday Writers are encouraged to attend one of their monthly …

St. Peters Alderman believe he has much to offer the community.

Jerry Hollingsworth is a man of action. He likes to see things get done. Hollingsworth has served St. Peters and more specifically, the residents of Ward 2, on the Board of Aldermen since 1992. He is a partner at St. Charles Insurance Agency, but finds much fulfillment volunteering his time in the other organizations. “If I were to pick a favorite, it would be anything that deals with kids,” Hollingsworth said of his many volunteer activities. Hollingsworth finds the most value in organizations that help children achieve their potential. He is on the Board of Directors for a variety of youth assisting organizations, such as United Services, the St. Charles County Boys and Girls Club and Missourians Who Kare for Injured and Disabled …

Capital Improvement Plan Allows City to Balance Funds Without Cutting Programs

Five-year plan attempts to get city back on track after being hit by economy.

The two important things to take out of Monday’s Capital Improvement Plan meeting were displayed front and center. On a piece of a white paper mounted to an easel, were two bullet points written in green marker: The message was good news for the Board of Aldermen. Sitting in the second floor of City Hall, the Board, City Administrator William Charnisky and other members of the city’s brain trust gathered to plan for this year and beyond. The Capital Improvement Plan is basically the budget plan for the city. The draft presented Monday night unveiled the city’s plans for the 2011-12 until 2015-16.  After all the number crunching was done, the plan shows the city is in good position. “This five-year plans is to get us back to where we were …

St. Peters Board of Aldermen Set to Meet Twice

Board of Aldermen to have special meeting on Jan. 24 to authorize ballot for the April 5 General Election.

Just because it's Monday doesn't mean the Board of Aldermen can't meet. The St. Peters Board of Aldermen normally meet on Thursdays. Tonight, Jan. 24, the Board will buck that trend and have a meeting at City Hall. In fact, the Board will have two meetings tonight.  The first, beginning at 4:45 p.m., is a special meeting called my Mayor Len Pagano. The purpose of the short meeting is to have City Clerk Rhonda F. Shawto transmit to the St. Charles County Election Authority the legal notice to be published for the Regular General Municipal Election to be held in the City of St. Peters, Missouri on April 5, 2011." In simple terms, the Board will be approving the ballot for the upcoming election. The ballot that is up for apporval is:  …

Late-Night Snow Drops on St. Peters

Schools in St. Peters cancelled by late Wednesday storm.

Just like the meteorologists predicted, St. Peters got snow late Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning. Just after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, snow flakes began to fall. The big flakes accumulated quickly and didn't take long to stick to roads and sidewalks. Almost immediately after the snow fell, St. Peters snow plows were out trying to clear the roads. With the snow still falling at a rapid rate, it was almost a Sisyphean task.     Before the snow even touched the ground, the city delayed trash service and cancelled the monthly meeting of St. Peters Senior Advisory Committee Meeting. Once the snow hit, schools started making the call. Lutheran High School, Fort Zumwalt schools, Francis Howell schools and St. Charles Community …

Impending Snowfall Delays Trash Service, Cancels Senior Advisory Committee Meeting

With the threat of a snow, St. Peters alters plans for Thursday, Jan. 20.

Snow hasn't even touched the ground in St. Peters, but the city is already planning ahead. With the forecast calling for up to seven inches of the white stuff, St. Peters has altered plans and canceled meeting. Just like earlier this month, the city has delayed trash service. All trash service scheduled for Thursday will be pushed back one day and be picked up on Friday. Also, all trash pick-ups scheduled for Friday will instead be done on Saturday.  Normal trash pick-up will resume Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. While the trash service is just being delayed, the St. Peters Senior Advisory Committee Meeting has been cancelled. The monthly meeting, led by Ward 2 Alderman Jerry Hollingsworth, has been cancelled with the threat of poor road …

The deadline has passed and the field is set for the April 5, 2011, General Municipal Election in St. Peters. Candidates had until 5 p.m. today, Jan. 18, to file and get placed on the ballot. The St. Peters Board of Alderman will have four of the eight spots up for re-election. All four of the incumbents have filed and will try and keep their seats. Some will have to fend off two challengers while one is going unopposed. The other race is for Municipal Judge.  Incumbent Dave Thomas will be in a three-way race to retain his seat. Thomas will square off John Scherr and Dolores Sherman.  Thomas, 40, was first elected to the Board in 2007. Alderman Gus Elliott More Than Just A Politician

Gus Elliott, Ward 3 Alderman, enjoys writing, serving the community and being a Girl Scout.

Ask Gus Elliott, St. Peters Ward 3 Alderman, what the best part of his job is, and he will say, “It is about helping the people.” Elliott was elected in 2007 to serve a four year term. He got his start in city politics as a member of the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission. He has filed for re-election in 2011. “The job of an alderman is simple," Elliott said. "Everyone thinks of aldermen sitting on the dais making ordinances. Then there is the part that you don’t think of until somebody needs their alderman. That is why I am available 24/7. The biggest thing is interfacing with the resident." He also gets job satisfaction from looking at a problem and finding a solution. “At first, it may seem like the city is unable to do something on …
