Tuesday night’s game marked the first time Hendrix has scored two goals in one game. “It’s pretty exciting to be able to score two in a game for the first time,” Hendrix said.  Hendrix scored her first goal 17 minutes into the contest. Fort Zumwalt South sophomore Brooke Hendrix pots two goals to help Lady Bulldogs beat Fort Zumwalt North.

The Fort Zumwalt South Lady Bulldogs earned a Gateway Athletic North Conference victory over the Fort Zumwalt North Lady Panthers on Tuesdday behind a strong performance from sophomore midfielder Brooke Hendrix.  Hendrix scored two of the Lady Bulldogs’ three goals in the 3-2 win at Zumwalt South. “It’s pretty exciting, to be able to score two in a game for the first time,” Hendrix said.   The sophomore has seven goals so far this season. Lady Bulldog coach Vernon Gano said the team tries to emphasize Hendrix’ speed. “She can beat a lot of the girls on the field,” Gano said.  “With the amount of breakaways she’s had she should have 15 or 16 goals right now.” Zumwalt South looked determined to control the contest from the beginning. Freshman Making An Impact for Lady Bulldogs

Bridget Stewart, Fort Zumwalt South soccer freshman, leads team with 12 goals scored this season.

Since her older sister Shannon, is already on the team, most members of the Fort Zumwalt South girls varsity soccer team already knew Bridget Stewart before she came to the school this year. Since she’d come to several games the last two years, most of the Bulldogs had met Bridget. They liked her, and once they found out she was a soccer player too, thought she’d be a nice addition to the program’s freshman team once the 2011 season came around. What those girls didn’t know, but found out very quickly once tryout practices began back in March, was that Bridget Stewart, who stands all of 5-foot-4, might be smaller and younger than most every varsity player in the area, but she plays with big-time heart and has big-time talent to boot. “…

Lady Pirates Down Lady Bulldogs 2-1

St. Charles girls beat Fort Zumwalt Tuesday in a GAC North Contest.

A solid defense played a key role in the St. Charles Pirates’ Gateway Athletic North Conference North victory over the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldogs at Zumwalt South in St. Peters last night.  “We’ve been defending well lately,” St. Charles head coach Rodney Orrick said after the 2-1 win. “It doesn’t matter weather we go in a three-back system or a four-back system. They’re doing a good job of keeping the goals against down. Tonight, they were really put to the test.” Emily White, Jordan Trautmann, Erika Teson, and Lydia Haake all played in the backfield for the Lady Pirates. St. Charles goalkeeper Taylor Wolf had 11 saves in the contest. “Taylor Wolf was huge for us tonight,” Orrick said. “We’ve really been challenging her to come up big …

Fort Zumwalt South Ace Throwing Up Zeroes

Bulldog starter Gerrion Grim has two shutouts in two weeks to lead South.

Fort Zumwalt South junior pitcher Gerrion Grim has made a habit out of pitching shutouts in the last few weeks. Grim pitched a 7-0 shutout against Fort Zumwalt East on Tuesday and a 6-0 shutout against Washington on April 14. In Tuesday’s shutout he struck out six batters, walked two and gave up just two hits. “When he gets his second pitch moving and the first strike, Gerrion is very tough,” South head coach Keith DeShurley said after the win over East. “When he gets ahead of hitters, starts making them swing at his pitch, and his second pitch is on, he’s very difficult to deal with, and for the last two games they haven’t scored a run off of him.” At times Grim had to battle against East. The Lions had men on base, but Grim forced them …

Wow! Besides being a great pitcher, he is also a great kid! I used to watch him teach the little kids how to play baseball in the field behind our house every summer. Way to go!   more ›

Grim's Shutout Propels South Past East

Fort Zumwalt South tops Fort Zumwalt South 7-0 in rain-shortened game.

Fort Zuwalt South junior pitcher Gerrion Grim pitched his second shutout in two weeks Tuesday afternoon in a Gateway Athletic Conference North Contest against the Fort Zumwalt East at the home of the Lions. Grim struck out six batters for the Bulldogs, walked two, and gave up just two hits in the 7-0 win. The junior beat Washington 6-0 last week.   “I just wanted to get ahead and make them swing at my pitch,” Grim said. “In my early starts I had trouble getting ahead.” The South Bulldogs’ defense didn’t commit a single error in the contest. South banged out six hits, five of the six coming against East starting pitcher Eric Keling. Clayton Meyer replaced Keling in the fifth inning.   “This was the best game we’ve played all year, without …

Lady Bulldogs Drop Game to Francis Howell 3-0

Fort Zumwalt South falls to 4-4 with a loss on Tuesday.

The Francis Howell Lady Vikings’ soccer team’s success story continued last night with a 3-0 non-conference home victory against the Fort Zumwalt South Lady Bulldogs. Francis Howell improved to 5-0 with the win. The Lady Vikings wasted little time in establishing dominance. Freshman forward Jordan Catalano started things off with a goal 10 minutes into the first half. Senior forward Melanie Hunt added another goal 12 minutes and 30 seconds before the end of the first half. Hunt fired off a shot just a few yards from the goal that found the back of the net. “The girls game out strong tonight,” Francis Howell coach Janet Muehling said. “This is only our fifth game and in our past two games the girls came out kind of sluggish. They were more …

Fort Zumwalt South Baseball Prepping for Season

Bulldogs trying to replace six seniors from last seasons 23-7 team.

Although the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldog baseball team lost six seniors to graduation in its starting lineup, head coach Keith DeShurley feels the 2011 campaign can still be a success. “When we won a state championship in 2009 it elevated this program to a whole other level,” DeShurley said. “We lost quite a few kids last year, but I would still expect us to be competitive.” FZS finished the 2010 season with a 23-7 mark. Junior Gerrion Grim will lead the Bulldogs’ from the mound as the No. 1 pitcher this year DeShurley said. “He (Grim) got a lot of innings as a sophomore,” DeShurley said. “When he’s on the mound we’ll be competitive. There will be questions on the back side of the rotation.”  Senior Ryan Haskell will be the Bulldogs’ No. 2 …
