The Fort Zumwalt School District is asking voters to approve a no tax increase $15 million bond issue for district-wide improvements on April 2, according to STLtoday.com. According to the article, improvements would include: A bond issue is a loan made by the district with permission of the registered voters in the district. General obligation bonds must pass with four-sevenths of the majority vote. In 2011, 66.49 percent of local voters approved Fort Zumwalt's Proposition 1. The proposition requested $18.5 million in general obligation bonds with no tax increase for residents, to help pay off a leasehold revenue bond issue passed in 1997, and free up between $3 million and $4 million per year in the district’s operating fund. Matt Hansen, 38, Winfield, goes to trial on March 12.
A former Fort Zumwalt West Middle School teacher who was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and allegedly taping students undressing at camp is now facing federal charges, according to STLtoday.com. Matt Hansen, 39, Winfield, taught seventh grade math in the district since 2004, and was placed on administrative leave in 2012. According to STLtoday.com, Hansen was indicted in federal court on Thursday "on eight counts of attempted production of child pornography and one count of possession of child porn." Mike Swaringim and Scott Grasser will be sworn in at the April 15 board of education meeting.
Fort Zumwalt School District will not hold an election for the board of education this year. Two candidates filed for two open seats on the board. The terms of Scott Grasser and Carol Russell end in April. Nancy Coleman from Fort Zumwalt Administrative Services, said Mike Swaringim and Scott Grasser will be sworn in at the April 15 board of education meeting. Swaringim served on the Fort Zumwalt Board of Education from 1999 until his defeat in the 2011 election. He served as board president at various times throughout his terms. According to the district website, Grasser has served on the board since 2004. Fort Zumwalt School board members serve three-year terms.

McTeacher’s Night takes place at local restaurants beginning Oct. 2, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Local teachers are trading their grade books in for fries and Big Macs throughout the month of October. Local McDonald’s restaurants are teaming up with teachers to help raise money for Fort Zumwalt and Francis Howell schools on McTeacher's Night. McTeacher’s Night is a fundraiser that has provided more than $600,000 to St. Louis and Metro East area schools over the past nine years. On McTeacher’s Night, schools partner with and help run their local McDonald’s. Teachers and faculty members work as McDonald’s crew members and a percentage of sales from McTeacher’s Night is given to the school. The Fort Zumwalt School District has made some policy changes to the Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Program this year. The changes are in place after a Fort Zumwalt West Middle School teacher was arrested and charged with possession of child pornography in August, then also found to have allegedly taped students undressing while away at camp last school year. Matt Hansen, 38, taught seventh grade math in the district since 2004, and also assisted with the district's Fifth Grade Outdoor Education Program. The Fort Zumwalt School District Board of Education will discuss the 2012-13 tax levy at its regularly scheduled board meeting tonight. School officials will make a recommendation on what that levy should be, according to the board's meeting agenda. Last year, school board officials approved a rate that claimed $4.76 per $100 of business and residential property tax, an increase of about 16 cents over the previous levy. The Fort Zumwalt School District is hoping to educate students and parents about the dangers of heroin use. To raise awareness about the drugs negative impacts on the community, the district is offering a presentation of A Race to Death-Heroin in Our Community. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, Spet. 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Fort Zumwalt East High School auditorium. East High School is located at 600 Executive Avenue in St. Peters. According to a news release from the district, there were 200 teen deaths in the St. Louis area in 2012 due to heroin overdose.
