Athlete of the Week: Zumwalt South's Bowman Overtime Heroics Win Accolades

Fort Zumwalt South's Dillon Bowman wins the Athlete of the Week award.

Tray Mitchell has been taken down. The three-time champion of the Patch Athlete of the Week vote was finally beaten. All it took was some overtime heroics from Zumwalt South's Dillon Bowman. Let's see how the voting went down.  Which St. Charles County football player was the best in the first round of the 2012 playoffs? Bowman may not have had the big numbers Thursday night against Zumwalt North, but he came through when it mattered. Bowman picked a 25-yard touchdown run in overtime and then successfully made the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a big Week 10 playoff win over the rival Panthers. The touchdown was Bowman's second big play of the game. Earlier in the contest, he completed his only pass of the day to Casey Owens for…

Playoffs: District Football Playoffs Continue Wednesday Night

Fort Zumwalt South will face Parkway Central in the second round of the District playoffs.

Let's get to the matchups.   What will Zumwalt South do for an encore? In the first playoff round, and without injured star Chase Abbington, the Bulldogs knocked off Zumwalt North with a two-point conversion in overtime. In Round 2 of the Class 5, District 3 playoffs, the Bulldogs will take on the rested team from Parkway Central. Thanks to an 8-1 regular season record, Parkway Central picked up a first-round bye.  After two blowouts in the opening round of the Class 3, District 5 tournament, two St. Charles-area schools will be facing off in Round 2. …

Matchups Set for District Football Playoffs

Week 10 kicks off the new-look Missouri football playoff format.

Week 10 of the high school football season in Missouri is no longer a battle to improve playoff standings. Instead, it's a chance to keep playing—or see a season end.  Wanting to have every regular season game count, the powers that be changed the playoff format this season. A complex point system was created to make sure every game played weighed into the playoff seeding. After nine games, the seeds are set and the Week 10 matchups are in place.  Here are the Week 10 matchups for St. Charles County teams in the first round of the playoffs: Home * Note: Some seeds have been altered despite the standings. Friday Night Spotlight: Football Regular Season Comes to an End

Zumwalt East faces Warrenton, Zumwalt South takes on Vianney and Howell Central plays Jackson.

Week 9 is here and it's the last week of the regular season. Teams will get one more shot to make a change to the playoff standings. Let's see what games are going down for the St. Peters schools.  Fort Zumwalt East bounced back from a Week 7 loss with a big Week 8 win. The Lions currently sit in second place in the Class 5, District 3 standings and a win on Friday against Warrenton would help lock up that spot.  The Lions will be taking on a team with a 2-6 record that scores a lot of point, but also gives up a lot. On the year, Warrenton has scored 213 points—just 20 points fewer than the Lions—but has surrendered nearly 36 points per game (287 total). Like the Lions, Warrenton is entering the final game of the regular season coming off …

District Playoff Matches Taking Shape as Football Season Winds Down

The new-look district format has Zumwalt East, Zumwalt South both hosting a playoff game.

District football in Missouri used to be so easy to understand. For the last several years, football teams were put in four- or five-team districts and the last few weeks of the regular season became a de-facto playoff. Everyone played every district school once and the teams with the two best records in district play would advance to the playoffs. That will all change this year. Friday night is Week 9 of the football season and the end of the regular season--a departure from the 10-game regular seasons of years past. The change means that the old Week 10 will actually be District Playoff round one. In an effort to have every regular season game count, the format for districts was altered. A complex point system was created to make sure …
