Francis Howell Vikings will take on the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldogs Thursday night at Francis Howell. After losing their first two games of the year, the Francis Howell Vikings have rebounded with two consecutive victories to even their record at 2 and 2. On Monday, Howell bounced the Fort Zumwalt East Lions, 59-37. The Vikings were led in scoring that night by Carly Harper’s 22 points, including six 3-pointers. This season Harper is the leading scorer for the Vikings, averaging 12.5 points per game. The Bulldogs also lost their first two games of the year, and they have rebounded with three consecutive wins for a record of 3 and 2. Holt's Tray Mitchell won the fan vote for GAC football player of the year.
All Tray Mitchell does is win. Holt's Mitchell, was a 3-time Patch Athlete of the Week champion for his prowess on the football field. This time he won the GAC football player of the year crown in the fan's vote. Let's see how the voting went down. Who was the top GAC football player in 2012? Total votes: 33 Mitchell, the Holt running back ,had a big season for the Indians. Mitchell was the Indians' workhorse. He carried the ball 156 times for 1,157 yards—good for the tops in the GAC Central. His 7.4 yards per carry was tops among all GAC runners with at least 100 carries. The 2012 football season is in the books for most the Gateway Athletic Conference teams. Yes, it's time for another edition of the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week fan poll. Except this week has a twist. Instead of looking at the last week, we're looking at the entire season. Tell us in the poll below: Who was the top GAC football player in 2012? Shane Barrett—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions sophomore quarterback had a solid first season leading the East offense. As a passer, Barrett was 80-for-169 for 1,441 yards and 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Running the ball, Barrett was tied for the GAC Central in touchdowns with 13. He actually led the conference with 82 points scored thanks to two successful two-point conversions. …

The votes are in the choice has been made: Jordan Stephens is the fan's choice for top soccer player in the GAC. Let's see how the voting went down. Who was the top GAC boys soccer player in 2012? Stephens was the top point getter in all of the GAC. Stephens was led the GAC South, all of the GAC with his 67 points. The majority of his points came from his 26 goals—best in the GAC. Fall break starts Wednesday, Nov. 21. Spring break runs March 29 until April 5.
Summer vacation is winding down rapidly for students in the Fort Zumwalt School District. Buses will be out bright and early on Wednesday, Aug. 15, for the first day of school. Last year, Zumwalt students had the first day of class on Aug. 17. Barring any snow days, the projected last day of school falls on Friday, May 17, 2013. The Francis Howell Board of Education discusses design extras of the athletic fields.
Francis Howell High School is getting a new athletic complex, that much is known. What it looks like is now the question. Back in February, after weeks of discussion, the board approved using bond money to fund the multi-million dollar complex that has a baseball field, a softball field and other amenities. Last Thursday, during the June 21 meeting, the board approved a construction contract to Lamb Construction to build the $2,257,000 complex. With those two road blocks out of the way, only one big one remains: Design. Thursday night, at board's special end-of-the-year meeting, the board will discuss add alternates on the project. The Francis Howell School District is facing a deficit of nearly $2.4 million in the operating funds for the 2012-13 school year.
Unless it gets some unexpected revenue, Francis Howell will be losing money for the 2012-13 school year. The Howell Board of Education voted on June 21 to approve the proposed budget for the ensuing school year. According to budget documents, Howell is facing a deficit of nearly $2.4 million in the operating funds. The budget passed with a 5-1 vote. Board member Eric Seider was absent from the meeting and board member Mike Hoehn voted against the proposal. "It's very difficult to accept the budget with deficit spending," Hoehn said. "Its not balanced at all." The vote on the budget ends weeks of debate from the board. Jaycen -- The athletic complex is technically already paid for. The money being spent is out of bond passed by voters in 2008. It's not even in the budget. If they don't build the complex, the district still has deficit spending next year.   more ›
