Crusaders hand Cougars a loss in a battle of two previously-unbeaten conference teams.

The St. Dominic Lady Crusaders basketball team wasted little time in building a sizeable lead in last night’s AAA Conference showdown against the Lutheran St. Charles Lady Cougars at Lutheran High School.  Lauren Needham’s basket at the 2:22 mark in the first quarter gave St. Dominic a 21-0 lead in the battle of two previously unbeaten AAA schools. The early lead propelled the Lady Crusaders past Lutheran 73-55. The tide turned early in favor of St. Dominic thanks to turnovers—the Lady Cougars committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter while St. Dominic had four. St. Dominic also came out firing from both the field and the free-throw line. The Lady Crusaders went 13 for 16 from the field and went for six from the line.  “This is a real …

Zumwalt East Unable to Stop Parkway Central's Bergesh

Colts' sophomore scores 20 to lead Parkway Central past the Lady Lions.

A strong performance from sophomore Christie Bergesh paced the Parkway Central Lady Colts in their lopsided 55-24 non-conference win over the Fort Zumwalt East Lady Lions on Jan. 3 at Zumwalt East.  Bergesh finished the contest with 20 points.  “I started out rough with the fouling,” Bergesh said. “We were all a little rough on the fouling, but then we picked it up. Rebounding helped my points a lot. It gave me a lot of second chances and it also helped that I hit my free throws.”  The Lady Colts established a 6-0 lead in the early minutes behind baskets from Alyssa Waitz, Bergesh, and Chelsy Gibson, but Zumwalt East fought back. Nicole Taylor’s two free throws at the 3:22 mark tied the game up at six points. Parkway held a slim 10-8 lead …

The dominance continued throughout the second quarter. Angie Steinbacher’s basket at the 2:37 mark in the second quarter gave Lutheran a 30-6 lead. The Lady Cougars led 32-8 at halftime.  …

Fort Zumwalt South Girls Bow Out of Playoffs With Sectional Loss to Fort Zumwalt West

Lady Bulldogs can't overcome bad start against fourth-ranked Lady Jags.

CHESTERFIELD — Fort Zumwalt South girls basketball coach Mike Schneider doesn’t necessarily believe his team overachieved this season by advancing to the Class 5 state sectionals.  But he was concerned that the Lady Bulldogs may have peaked last week, when they won the District 8 championship game over Francis Howell Central. Unfortunately for South, Schneider’s fears came to fruition Wednesday night, when it got bounced from the MSHSAA playoffs following a 48-20 sectional round loss to Fort Zumwalt West at Maryville University’s Simon Athletic Center. “I’m trying to come up with something clever to say,” Schneider said. “Zumwalt West, they’re a great team. They’ve got a lot of D-1 athletes on their squad, and this was their game.” And …
