Local meteorologists are predicting one to three inches will hit the St. Louis area, beginning overnight.
According to local meteorologists, one to three inches of snow may fall across the St. Louis area by Thursday evening. KSDK is reporting snowfall will begin overnight and by sunrise approximately an inch will have fallen. KMOV reports that freezing temperatures are coming along with the snow. Temps around 20 degrees are reportedly expected Thursday, down from Wednesdays temperatures in the 50s. Gusting winds are expected to accompany the cold and snow, which KMOV reports will taper off around noon Thursday with flurries possible in the afternoon. Local ice skaters will "Skate Across America" at the St. Peters Rec-Plex's 17th annual spring ice show. Rec-Plex-trained figure skaters ranging from 3-years-old to advanced age will skate and explore cities, states and landmarks throughout the county. The St. Louis Blues annual Rink Tour graced local hockey fans at the St. Peters Rec-Plex on Thursday night. The event, which was sponsored by Verizon Wireless and Dairy Queen brought out current St. Louis Blues players Brad Winchester and Roman Polak as well as former Blues Forward Gino Cavallini. The event was initially scheduled for December 12, 2010 but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Fans of all ages came out to interact with the players. Many fans brought their cameras along to get shots with Winchester, Polak and Cavallini. Various different objects were autographed by the players, ranging from youth players hockey sticks' to the shoes of some fans. Here are five snow sports the whole family can enjoy. 1. Sledding. Sledding isn't just going down a hill. If you feel ambitious, you can make a game out of it. Say you have a family of six, have two teams, three on each team. Three races, best two of out three. Try to make the races last 30 seconds. Add style points. After sleet and snow hit St. Peters, the city began to thaw out on a chilly Wednesday.
The snowstorm was hardly historic, but St. Peters did get hit by a wintry mix Tuesday. Between four and six inches of sleet/snow fell on St. Peters throughout the day on Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning. The accumulation was enough to shut down Interstate 70 and close schools for Wednesday. Early Wednesday morning the Missouri Department of Transportation reopened I-70, but cautioned drivers to avoid the road if they could. Thanks to the bright sun and the work of road crews, most of the snow was removed from I-70 in St. Peters. The road conditions were slushy, but driveable. As snow continues to pelt St. Peters, several important things are being shut down.
Winter weather is continuing to bombard St. Peters and the rest of Missouri. The day-long snowstorm has forced the closure and cancelations of many things, chief among them Interstate 70. The Missouri Department of Transportation has shut down I-70 from Kansas City to St. Louis. With visibility only getting worse as it gets darker outside, MoDOT has prohibited drivers for driving on 70. "Heavy snow is making the highway impassable and whiteout conditions are causing poor visibility," MoDOT said in a press release. "MoDOT said this action would help keep motorists from becoming stranded on the interstate. The agency is continuing to plow statewide as conditions allow." With wind gusts predicted, visibility could drop to zero. If that happens, MoDOT officials say even their plows will have to stay off the roads.
Missouri Department of Transportation officials are urging residents to get wherever they need to be to wait out the coming storm by noon. After that, they say, roads will only get worse. “The morning rush hour is going to be the best conditions we see all day,” said Becky Allmeroth, district maintenance engineer. National Weather Service says its unlikely region misses winter storm.
Emergency officials are planning for a half-inch to an inch of freezing rain and ice, topped by about a foot of snow as the perfect winter storm bears down on the St. Louis area from the west. “Whatever you get, it’s going to be in a large amount,” said Jim Kramper of the National Weather Service. “We’re fairly confident this is a big storm.” Major problems are expected, due to perfect storm conditions of a build up of ice, a large amount of snow and dropping temperatures and possible power outages. Just as the snow from the last snowstorm has nearly melted completely away, St. Peters is bracing for another round in its battle with Mother Nature.
