Fortunately for the staff at the new Spencer Road Library, the new parking lot has plenty of spaces. Nearly all were needed on Wednesday. Most the of 140-plus parking spaces—more than double what was available at the old library—were filled with cars as visitors filed into the new library on its opening day. After two years of construction, the finishing touches were made and the doors opened at 9 a.m. Around noon the library was filled in all areas. Some visitors were just checking out the new digs while others were checking out books. Some were just using the new upstairs computer lab. No matter what, day one was a hit. St. Charles County libraries change their policy to protect the privacy of people reserving books.
The St. Charles County Library District is changing the way it labels reserved books for customer pickup. Wrappers on reserved books used to display customers' first and last names as well as the last four digits of their phone numbers in plain sight. Now, the wrappers will only show the first two letters of the person’s first and last name. The St. Charles County Library Board changed the policy last April as a result of a concerned resident who believed the labels could make library users more vulnerable to identity theft. Despite the change, the resident is not convinced that everyone’s privacy will be protected. Library users who have a two-letter first or last name will still have most of their name on the labels. Maggie Preiss is …

New regulations bring district in line with state statutes.

The library will now use a combination of library card numbers with letters from the patron's first and last name. Each patron will be given their specific identification information, but it won't be obvious to others at the self-pickup reserve desks who held the book in reserve. The library will move immediately toward changing circulation software and book wrappers with the goal of having all the changes made by July 1 at all branches. …
