Basketball season is winding down, which means it's the best time of the year. The playoffs are in full bloom—finally. All teams, big and small, are now just one loss away from packing up and waiting until next year. Last week Fort Zumwalt East, Zumwalt South and Francis Howell Central each sent the boys and girls teams into the District wood chipper. Only two teams came out as District champs. The Howell Central girls and Zumwalt South boys have advanced to the Sectional rounds, starting Wednesday. The winter season rolls on with the start of basketball playoffs.
February is almost over but the winter sports season is still powering on, although the number of athletes still involved is dwindling by the day. This last weekend saw the end of the wrestling and swimming seasons. This week, for most of the basketball teams in St. Peters, the playoffs begin. One more loss, and the season is over. It's the best time of the year, it's playoff time. It's District basketball time for most teams in Missouri—including three St. Peters high schools. Fort Zumwalt East, Fort Zumwalt South and Francis Howell Central are now in win-or-go-home mode. Lutheran Cougars pick up narrow AAA win against Trinity.
The Lutheran St. Charles Cougars basketball team earned a close 56-54 AAA Conference victory over the Trinity Catholic High School Titans last night at Lutheran High School. “The whole game we were trying to focus on the boards,” Cougars’ head coach Michael Holtmeier said. “In the first game they killed us on the boards—and in their second opportunities and second shots. I think we were consistent on that throughout the whole game. Trinity probably still out-rebounded us, but we competed.” The Titans defeated the Cougars 50-48 on Dec. 17. Trinity held a 42-39 advantage at the end of the third quarter. The Titans led throughout the entire third quarter, but Lutheran would go on to outscore the Titans 17-12 in the fourth quarter. Matt …

Week 9 of the winter season is packed with big games around St. Charles County.
The time off period is just about officially over for sports teams around St. Charles County. The holiday season comes to a close on Monday with the observation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. After that day—a day some teams actually aren't taking off—school is back in session and the conference races are really beginning to heat up. Non-conference games still dot the schedule, but the conference games bring the most drama. While some good teams are starting to pull ahead of the pack, the GAC North and GAC South standings for both the boys and girls are still murky. The only way to clear things up?
