The new-look district format has Zumwalt East, Zumwalt South both hosting a playoff game.
District football in Missouri used to be so easy to understand. For the last several years, football teams were put in four- or five-team districts and the last few weeks of the regular season became a de-facto playoff. Everyone played every district school once and the teams with the two best records in district play would advance to the playoffs. That will all change this year. Friday night is Week 9 of the football season and the end of the regular season--a departure from the 10-game regular seasons of years past. The change means that the old Week 10 will actually be District Playoff round one. In an effort to have every regular season game count, the format for districts was altered. Voters were impressed by Jefferson's four touchdown game for the Cougars.
In a losing effort, Bryce Jefferson couldn't be stopped. The Lutheran High School sophomore scored not one, not two, not even three—four touchdowns in Week 6. It was an impressive week, for Jefferson, enough so to help him win the Patch St. Charles County Athlete of the Week award. Out of the 100 votes cast, Jefferson beat out Holt's Mark Cushing by just six votes to earn the crown. Here's how the voting broke down: Which St. Charles County football player had the best Week 6? Although Lutheran fell short against Trinity, sophomore Jefferson had a big game for the Cougars. Tell us in the poll below: Which St. Charles County football player had the best Week 6? Matt Etherton—Fort Zumwalt East: The Lions are 5-1 and got win No. 5 in a big win against rival Zumwalt South. The quarterback-receiver combo of Shane Barrett and Matt Etherton had a big game. Etherton had just four catches, but he made them count en route to 105 yards receiving. Three of his four catches went for scores—one from 19 yards, one from 56 yards out and another from 16 yards. The wins just keep coming for Brett Collins and the Lutheran Cougars. After helping his team snap an 18-game losing streak in Week 1 of the 2012 high school football season, Lutheran quarterback Brett Collins was nominated for the Patch St. Charles County Athlete of the Week. Collins, with 76 percent of the vote, came out on top. Here's how the voting broke down: Who was the top football player from Week 1 of the 2012 season? Collins had a hand in all four touchdowns for the Cougars. As the quarterback, Collins was 12-for-21 for 209 yards and three touchdowns against no interceptions. Duchesne's Abby Smegner wins the Athlete of the Week award after a strong showing at the District track meet.
Duchesne's Abby Smegner had quite the showing at the Class 3, District 4 meet. Smegner paced the field in the 800 with her first-place time of 2:20.8 to win the District title. Her winning ways didn't stop on the track. Smegner was able to take the field in the St. Charles County Athlete of the Week voting. Smegner racked up 38 percent of the votes to win the award. Who had the best showing during District track weekend? Total votes: 26 The Duchesne girls track team thrived in the longer-distance races during Saturday's Class 3, District 4 meet. St. Charles Pirate Ellen Weaver's big week earns her the fan's choice for Athlete of the Week.
It appears the voters in St. Charles County are impressed by offense. Last week St. Charles High School's Ellen Weaver put on an offensive clinic for the Pirates. In two games she potted five goals and tallied two assists on the soccer pitch. It's a pretty big understatement to say that's pretty good. Weaver's impressive week caught the eye, and the votes, around St. Charles County. The Pirate picked up 72 percent of the vote to take home the St. Charles County soccer player of the week award.
