Francis Howell School District Reports Safety Threat Rumor

Police believe non-specific rumors of violence on Dec. 21 are not credible.

The Francis Howell School District on Wednesday sent out a safety alert to district patrons about rumors of potential violence in the district on Friday.  While no specifics were given, the district is working closely with local police departments on the matter.  Students will have a half day on Friday. It's the last day of finals for secondary students.  This is the second local school district to have a reported threat on Friday. A threat was also reported at Holt High School in the Wentzville School District.  Here is the note sent out to district patrons Wednesday:  Good Afternoon Parents/Guardians: First, thank you for your feedback and patience as we have worked through this week at our schools. It has been a challenging week for all…

I was unaware of the threats & rumors until I received the letter from Sup. Pam Sloan. Today I allowed my daughter to stay home with her grandparents and bake cookies instead of going to elementary school. The few tests that were set for their half-day Friday were moved up a day to Thursday so I saw no need for her to attend with this threat hanging over our heads. My dear daughter said she was …   more ›

ID Badge Policy Won't Change in Current Year

Board votes 6-1 in favor of not changing the ID enforcement policy immediately.

ID badge requirements for Fort Zumwalt students won't be changing this year. Board member Laure Schmidt was the lone vote in favor of the change. At the November meeting of the Board, Schmidt spoke out in support of an immediate change to the District policy. "All this time is being spent checking ID badges, and it has nothing to do with education," she said at the meeting. Tuesday night, Schmidt didn't change her tune. The current policy requires all students to display the ID badges at all times, but compliance has been an issue. When the policy came up in November, the Board heard from the five high school principals about the challenges of enforcing the rule. Discipline because of ID violations are on the rise. "I do not want kids …

Raising Cain: Thoughts on Motherhood

Don’t Allow School Supplies To Break The Bank

School supply lists seem to be getting longer every year, and with two kids to buy for, this family is trying to stretch the budget.

I used to love school shopping. My mom would take me a few weeks before school started and we would shop for new clothes and shoes. We would pick up a package of loose-leaf paper, pencils, some crayons, and (my favorite) a new Trapper Keeper. I would organize and reorganize my supplies days before school started. That first day, I would march across the field to the elementary school in my new outfit with my $8 for textbook rental in my pocket. As a kid, I loved it. Now, I’m the parent. It seems that the school supply lists the teachers send home gets longer every year. Many of the supplies we are asked to buy are for classroom use, and while I have no problem donating items for kids who need them, it would be nice to have a choice in the …

I think perhaps we should start challenging the school system on why the parents are paying for such a variety of items that should be covered by our tax dollars. Having to buy rolls of tiolet paper, chalk, material for the classroon boards should be covered by the school. At the next school board meeting us moms should ask what items the district could purchase at bulk prices to eliminate or …   more ›

Fairmount Elementary Celebrates History Day

Students learn about history in interactive events.

Fairmount Elementary in St. Peters has done History Day in the past, but this year decided to go bigger.  Students at the school were able to interact and experience history Friday. The normal school was transformed to give students a glimpse at the past, as well as the future. For the first time, the school took the event outside as well. In the exceptionally nice weather, kids were able to learn from volunteers. In fact, all of the activities were put on by volunteers.

Theater Review: Francis Howell North Production Impresses

Francis Howell North put on a showing of "Godspell" on Thursday, April 7, 2011.

By Kassandra King of Francis Howell Sunday stories of Jesus and his disciples are often colored in different ways, but few of them include tie-dye and glitter. In their recent production of “Godspell,” Francis Howell North gave a new take on religious tales. Withstanding centuries of interpretation, the Gospel of Saint Matthew serves as the basis for “Godspell.” Conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, “Godspell” is a series of musical parables conveying the themes of love, peace, and goodness. The story follows Jesus as he attempts to teach ten individuals the meaning of treating other people with kindness and spreading morality throughout the world. Spinning age-old fundamentals into the vibrant 70s, …
