In an effort to take impaired drivers off the road during the holiday season, St. Peters Police have planned a sobriety checkpoint. At an undisclosed location on the weekend of Dec. 14, St. Peters Police will be cracking down on drunken driving. The checkpoint is part of an effort to make the roads safer—218 people were killed and 867 seriously injured in crashes involving an impaired driver in 2011. St. Peters Police said impaired driving contributes to nearly 30 percent of all Missouri traffic fatalities. Drunken driving can result in jail time, the loss of a driver's license, or being sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Insurance rates also can rise, along with legal fees. Law enforcement officers in the St. Charles County area will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in an undisclosed location in St. Peters. The exact date and time of the checkpoint will not be released, but it will be sometime between April 22 and April 30. “It’s never worth the risk to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers could lose their license, pay large fines, or worst of all, cause a tragic loss of life,” St. Peters Police Chief Tom Bishop said in a press release.
