St. Peters Aldermen Get Back to Business

Board debates internal issues, park naming at June meeting.

For the first time in nearly a month, the St. Peters Board of Aldermen returned to work in the chambers of the Justice Center. After not having a meeting the first Thursday in June, the Board was back in action June 23 and ready to tackle a lengthy agenda. Things kicked off at the work session, where to Board spent a majority of the time talking about two agenda items. The work session was supposed to begin with a discussion on park naming, but Alderman Jerry Hollingsworth, Ward 2, asked if that discussion could take place later in the meeting. Hollingsworth said Alderman Gus Elliott, Ward 3, wanted to share his thoughts on the issue and, since he wasn’t in his seat when the work session started, Hollingsworth wanted to give him a chance …

Aldermen Sworn In For New Terms, Roberts Appointed Board President

Election results approved at April 28, 2011 Board of Aldermen meeting.

It’s official: the incumbents retained their seats in St. Peters. The results of the April 5 election were certified Thursday night at the St. Peters Board of Aldermen meeting. Municipal Judge Donald Kohl, and the four Aldermen—Dave Thomas (Ward 1), Judy Bateman (Ward 2), Gus Elliott (Ward 3) and Don Aytes (Ward 4)—were approved and sworn in to serve another term. With the new terms starting, the Board needed to decide on a new President and make committee appointments. At the work session, the Board decided on these appointments. The Board couldn’t immediately decide on Board President and the Veterans Memorial Commission. Rocky Reitmeyer and Tommy Roberts both asked to be President, and if not serve on the Veterans commission. The …

Best Laid Plans: Aldermen Might Flock to Support Urban Chickens

The Planning and Zoning Commission balked at allowing city residents to raise chickens, but several aldermen sounded off to support the issue.

A new Chic-fil-A opened in St. Peters Thursday, but even the celebrated franchise was second in the pecking order to the city’s urban chicken discussion during the Board of Aldermen work session. During the April 8 Planning and Zoning meeting, 13-year-old Nick Anderson asked to be allowed to raise hens as part of a 4-H project after he worked to hatch eggs as part of a home-school project. The Planning and Zoning Commission voted 8-2 to recommend denial of the request. But the Board of Aldermen can override the recommendation with a simple majority vote, and several aldermen said they support the change. But most Board of Aldermen members took a different view during the board's Thursday work session. “I say let this happen,” said Ward 1 …

Election 2011

Board of Aldermen to Be Filled With Familiar Faces After Election

Incumbents went four-for-four in Tuesday's election.

Dave Thomas has some ideas for what he’d like to accomplish in his second term as St. Peters Ward 1 Alderman, but first he’d like to sleep. Exhausted from weeks of campaigning and a late push to make sure he retained his seat on the Board of Aldermen, Thomas found out late Tuesday that the voters of St. Peters elected him for another four-year term on the Board. “I started having bags under my eyes last weekend,” Thomas said. “I realized I hadn’t been sleeping for the past week. … I’m grateful for all the support. I’m glad the election process is over and now I’m ready to get back to work and serve our residents.” In his first re-election bid, Thomas found out it’s good to be an incumbent. The April 14 meeting agenda won’t have to include …

I know Delores Sherman she is a honest older lady who will make sure the Alderman do the right thing. Delores is just what St Peters needs. She wants a City Charter which is exactly what we need here in St Peters. I too would be concerned about all the Union ties with Scherr.   more ›

Fair Or Fowl: Board of Aldermen Debate Chickens

Board will vote on chicken ordinance at next meeting.

Chickens will soon find out if they are welcome in St. Peters, but if Thursday’s Board of Aldermen meeting is any indicting the feathered birds may be out of luck. In late 2010, a resident requested permission to build a chicken coop in his backyard for a 4-H project. The city of St. Peters researched the idea and first proposed allowing chickens inside city limits during a February joint session meeting. Thursday night during the Board’s work session, the Aldermen discussed the issue for the first time. Cathy Pratt, St. Peters’ manager for engineering and development services, presented a draft ordinance that would allow up to four chickens to be allowed in residential areas with a variety of restrictions. The chickens would have be in a …

Solar Panels and Storage Permits Decided at Aldermen Meeting

Rec-Plex South to get new solar panels while Spencer Road Storage had a special use permit denied by the Board of Aldermen.

Solar panels and special use permits were the big topics at Thursday’s Board of Aldermen meeting. While the big story was the Board’s denial of a special use permit for Exit 6 Pub and Brewery, there were other items on the agenda at the Justice Center the elicited debate. Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hutsler presented a request to purchase solar panels for the roof of Rec-Plex South during the Board’s 5 p.m. work session. The city had received a grant of $170,000 from the Department of Energy to purchase a solar energy system. The catch: the deal had to be completed by early March to receive the federal funding. To get the money, the board had to approve the item in the work session and vote on it at the meeting later that night. The…

Chicken Discussion Highlights Bi-Annual Meeting

St. Peters Board of Aldermen, Board of Adjustment and Planning and Zoning Commission met on Monday night to talk ethics, policy and chickens.

The Board of Aldermen, Board of Adjustment and the Planning and Zoning Commission gathered in City Hall for a meeting Monday night. Seated in a conference room at the newly renovated St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre, the trio of St. Peters government entities met for their bi-annual meeting. Feasting on sandwiches from Jimmy John’s, the three groups listened to a presentation on ethics and conflict of interests, heard about chickens (yes, chickens), and went over proposed zoning changes. The meeting kicked off with a presentation by John A. Young of Hazelwood and Weber LLC. Young informed the crowd about things they can and cannot do as members of government. For example, sending emails to other board members saying you will vote against …

Having participated in this meeting, it was enjoyable to experience the Cultural Arts Center after its renovation, and Mr. Young's presentation was highly informative. Yet it was perplexing that with pointed examples of how NOT to deny a petitioners due process, someone attempted to poison the procedure by discussing an issue that was yet to be presented. St. Peters does not need to bank a legal …   more ›
