The Francis Howell Board of Education will have two familiar faces for the next meeting. Tuesday's municipal election saw voters living in the Francis Howell District deciding between four people vying for two seats. In the end, voters chose the two incumbents. Amy McEvoy (4,127 votes, 36.82 percent) and Cynthia Bice (3,391 votes, 30.26 percent) defeated to Tony Yakich (1,837 votes, 16.39 percent) and Robert Faltisek (1,788 votes, 15.95 percent) to stay on the board. McEvoy and Bice were both elected to the board in 2010 and will now serve another three-year term on the board of education. Newly-elected State Rep. Bryan Spencer, R-District 63, worked his last day as a special education teacher for Francis Howell North High School on Jan. 7 and was sworn in as a state legislator on Jan. 9. Now he's fighting to be granted an unpaid leave of absence by the Francis Howell Board of Education which has twice denied his request, he said. Spencer said he'd like the opportunity to come back to the district as a teacher after serving the community as a state legislator. Under state law, legislators cannot hold government jobs, including teaching positions, during their term. Spencer could serve up to eight years if he is elected to four two-year terms. Francis Howell High School is getting a new athletic complex, that much is known. What it looks like is now the question. Back in February, after weeks of discussion, the board approved using bond money to fund the multi-million dollar complex that has a baseball field, a softball field and other amenities. Last Thursday, during the June 21 meeting, the board approved a construction contract to Lamb Construction to build the $2,257,000 complex. With those two road blocks out of the way, only one big one remains: Design. Thursday night, at board's special end-of-the-year meeting, the board will discuss add alternates on the project. Jaycen -- The athletic complex is technically already paid for. The money being spent is out of bond passed by voters in 2008. It's not even in the budget. If they don't build the complex, the district still has deficit spending next year.   more ›

Unless it gets some unexpected revenue, Francis Howell will be losing money for the 2012-13 school year. The Howell Board of Education voted on June 21 to approve the proposed budget for the ensuing school year. According to budget documents, Howell is facing a deficit of nearly $2.4 million in the operating funds. The budget passed with a 5-1 vote. Board member Eric Seider was absent from the meeting and board member Mike Hoehn voted against the proposal. "It's very difficult to accept the budget with deficit spending," Hoehn said. "Its not balanced at all." The vote on the budget ends weeks of debate from the board. The Francis Howell Board of Education will have one more meeting before the 2011-12 school year comes to a close at the end of June. The board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the administration building. After spend the last two meetings debating a budget for the next school year, the board will vote to approve the 2012-13 budget during Thursday's meeting. With declining revenue, Howell is staring at a deficit budget for the upcoming year. Projections in the final budget have the district facing a deficit of $2.4 million in the operating funds.
