On the article Activities for Kids During Summer Vacation: How Much is Too Much?

ReplyFirst of all I loved the article. As a parent I believe a cerain amount of planned extracurricular activity is good for the child. How much needs to be determined by the individual parent as each child is different. I do believe children need to be left to their own devices to entertain themselves. If everything is in a structured environment, creativity and imaginations are hampered. Sometimes kids just need to be kids.

On the article Sportsmanship: A Valuable Trait to Teach Kids

ReplyHave never coached a bad child but have had many a bad parent and opposing coaches over seventeen years. A couple of things most seem to forget, coaching children is a non-paid position. The children are not under contract and will probably never see the big show. Youth leagues are for learning. I coached children from Tee ball through 11 and twelve year olds, boys and girls alike. I believed in one thing, a child does not learn by sitting on the bench. I rotated the children, mine along with the rest, to assure everyone had equal playing time and not the just the mandated time by the leagues. Never had a losing season, and had a ton of fun along the way. Excellent article, sorry for getting long winded but glory seeking coaches rub me the wrong way.

ReplyRaising children can be a very humbling experience for the parents. I remember a young teenage girl walking ten feet in front of her parents while strolling through the Mall. Did not want to be seen with her parents by her friends. This would have been very traumatic I'm sure. This awareness of other peoples oppinion about yourself is all part of the growing up process, hard to let go isn't it Mom. Excellent article brought back a lot of memories.

ReplyThank you Holly for the best fathers day present a father could ask for. To be remembered and appreciated by their daughter. I was rather cool looking back in the day I think. Felt blessed the day you came into the world and was never disappointed in you. I believe it is something special when your daughter also becomes your friend. Love you sweet heart.

ReplySo many stories of your grandparents helping others float through my head. The thing that stood out to me the most was the act of helping another was never brought into question it was something they simply did. A wonderful example they placed before us to follow, the act of kindness and charity. I miss them greatly. A wonderful article very well written in your unique and fresh style. Thank you for the walk down memory lane.
