Courtyard Marriot to be Built at Site of Closed Hotel

A Courtyard Marriot is expected to be built on Veterans Memorial Parkway, west of Jungermann Road, at site of a closed hotel.

The hotel, which was most recently a Garden Plaza Hotel, is expected to be demolished and a new Courtyard Marriot built in its place. The 4-acre property will be divided and another lot possibly developed for a restaurant or retail.

The Courtyard Marriot will have a restaurant, meeting and banquet rooms. According to the developer, Midas Hospitality's website, the new hotel will have 125 rooms and is expected to open in fall 2014.

The St. Peters Board of Aldermen on Thursday approved a special use permit for the project. The permit includes approval for a communications tower which is on the current hotel to be relocated to the new hotel.

City officials said they welcome the redevelopment of this hotel, which in the past was a popular destination locally. A hotel has operated at this location for the past 30 years. In 2008, when it was a Holiday Inn Select, the hotel owner was accused of writing bad checks, and not fulfilling tax obligations, according to a story in the St. Charles Suburban Journals. It eventually lost its affiliation with Holiday Inn.

In the past few years, vacancy rates at the hotel increased, according to city staff.

On Thursday, a moving van was parked in front of the hotel and workers piled mattresses and other furniture inside.
